beenabout, you are so right, discipline and self respect are sadly, things that so many youngsters are now no longer taught at home, when these values are, we do people a favour in the long run and help others to become better human beings. i think it is time that we brought back national service asap., in our major cities, we have already got anarchy on the streets. although many youngsters would be afraid of national service, as they were in the past, everyone who has ever done it, says, it is the best thing that could have happened to them. my only negative comments is, our country, is too soft and would allow people to opt., out, we need to toughen up our act, in every sense of the word.

I joined the army as an infantry soldier and even as a volunteer it is tuff. I joined as a boy soldier at sixteen and half years old. It was a passport to hell. But on saying that it taught me many lessons. It taught me to respect, discipline, and how to behave. this was in 1978. I left a year later through family reasons.

Yes i do believe it is time to introduce such things as national service to youngsters now. But what we must remember is that letting louts into the army is not the answer. We must make sure that each individual is ready and suitable to train as a fighting force. Let's face it, when they are taken into the army, they will be trained to fight and kill people. When we decided to send someone into the army we say that they will learn to fight for our country. Which means that they will learn how to use weapons.

I have lived in Isreal for three years. There as a boy you are reqiured to go into the armed forces at the age sixteen and half and serve 3 years there. Yes am sure that it turns most boys into men, and it teaches them a lot about life. Respect, loyality and values.

But for some it teaches skills that they when leave can use on the street. I have seen it happen. That is why i feel a blanket national service for young people. We must be careful who we let in.

Wouldnt you agree though that even in training ones good and bad points show through?-if not then-Certainly on intake to the battalion!

The Army has its own disciplinary systems-but even these have been watered down due to introduced civil rights and political correctness-but Colchester prison is still not on any servicemens wish list as far as i know?.

Finally-lets not forget-Coppers go bad,Judges and Politicians go bad-the truth is-Anyone can go bad???.

Yes of course you are going to get your bad apples. But what i am trying to say is that even as volunteers it is a had job to complete the training. And when you come to the regiment they can cause problems.
I am not saying there is anything wrong with the military system. All am saying that it should not be forced to take any young person who has proved him or her self unwilling to accept the rules and values of our society. It is not the responsibility for the armed forces to teach youngsters values, that they do not want. It is better to say to them it is your choice prison or learn. If they choose the armed forces then i think they will learn. If they choose another course then that is up to them. Our armed forces need people who are willing to learn.

What about the youths with low confidence. what good is it in sending them into the sort of hell that could see them hanging from a rope just to escape it. This is why we don't have National Service. It would just be a torture for some.

This what i mean, we must make sure that it is OK to send young people into the military. I know from experience that not all young people are suitable for the the arm forces. Some just need to be put in there. But some could suffer if we get it wrong.

There is no way to screen who is right and who is wrong. No one should be forced into anything. Thats a very out dated view. Yes maybe there is more bad apples these days, but there are plenty of kids out there that would do anything for you.

What i am trying to say is that if society can not cope with the ever growing problem with the estate gangs then something must be do. Criminals are evaluated by court psychiatrist, then they should be able to determine if someone is fit to go to jail or not. The same should be for youngters too If they are fit to do national service.
