RobbieM: Mindy, just say they stink!! Don't sugar coat it for them

Hi RobbieM

It's like this. We all have our issues. I am a little OCD and a little bit of a perfectionist. Some issues are worse than others.

When I date a smoker I get to breath cancer causing smoke and kiss an ash try.

When a smoker dates me (a perfectionist) he gets all his work tools hung up from largest to smallest and he gets all his ties and underwear sorted and arranged by color. (underwear is sorted by newest to yellowest)

Plus smokers tend to burn holes in furniture and sheets and that drives perfectionist like me up the wall.

Har de har.......

I smoked from being 12 and quit a few years ago. Stopped stone dead, cold turkey - climbed the walls for bloody weeks - hardest thing I ever did, and I couldn't do it again.

But I don't mind smokers - only someone who's smoked knows how hard it is to stop.

My only stipulation is if there are youngsters in the room, take it outside.

Each to their own.

I think everybody has the right to decide who they want to be around. We all make decisions based on traits we pick. I pick not to date woman who smoke for two good reasons: My decreased wife and brother. Both died from lung cancer caused by cancer. I held my wife's hand as she past away and took her last breath. We were together for almost 40 years and the last 22 months when she tried to fight lung cancer was horrible and difficult to see. I had to make the decision to stop medical treatments for my brother so he could died according to his wishes.

I do not try to stop smoker's from smoking. I just stop myself from being around them.

That's the problem with smoking. Smokers aren't in control. The tobacco controls them . The one smoker I dated couldn't even get through dinner at Applebee's on our dates without having to leave to step outside and smoke.

I agree with you, too each his own. I have my own issues to deal with and I will never be a anti-smoking crusader, I'll just not date a smoker.

Maybe someday... For the past 25 years or so alcohol doesn't seem to affect me much. No matter how I drink, I never get beyond the mild little buzz that comes after the 3rd drink. Couple of years ago, I polished off a 5th of Canadian Whisky and followed it with 10 or 12 shots of Jose Cuervo and a quart of Gatorade and all it did was make me pee. Didn't even get a hangover!sigh (As a result, I drink very little knowing that I'm just throwing money away for no real effect.)

Naw, I'm afraid it'll take more than alcohol to make me kiss an ashtray. In the meantime, I'll continue to enjoy my cigarrettes and stay as far away as I can from those who are offended by my "nasty habit."

thumbs up

zztopbanana: What's OCD ?

Obsessive compulsive disorder. People feel compelled to do silly things, sometimes crazy things. Mine is mild. I have to have some things done certain ways. I can only go to bed if I get in bed from the left side of the bed. I tend to do things in threes. etc. Some have it bad. Not me, mine is silly and I can control it in public but when I'm alone I do the craziest things.

Then the guy was impolite.

I never smoked in non-smokers houses or cars etc - I had no right to subject anyone to my habit or addiction.

You should have ditched the guy because he was inconsiderate, not because he was a smoker.

Ive dated smokers, and they used to nag the living daylights out of me.

Maybe there's a link between nagging and smoking?

I maybe a little ocd too, in that i like to be tidy, neat and put things away where i can find them!

Other people seem to think its ok to have their crap everywhere, but i like to know when i need something i know where to find it.

Other people seen to think alphabetising your dvd collection is nuts, but its practical to me, especially when theres hundreds of them here!

An ex girlfriend mum said i was a bit of ocd when she came around here to find art on every wall.Funny, i thought i made the house beautiful and added style and grace to my house, but not her...oh no.....it must be my fault for making the place nicelaugh

I didn't know that, thanks - I learned something new today.

OCD sounds like it's not all bad........

What if the bed's against the wall ? Do you get in upside down ?

That would have been a lie. I ditched him because he smoked. His home stunk of smoke, his clothes, his breath, all stunk. etc etc etc. He hid it the first few dates but once we started getting close and saw each other often he couldn't hide it. He couldn't NOT take a cigarette break at dinner without getting irritable.

I want to control my boyfriend. I don't want to compete with a cigarette. :-)

Hey, smoke all you want I say to people. Doesn't bother me. I just won't date you. It's not a big deal and there are plenty of other women who like smokers.

I move the bed.

OCD is bad for some people. I saw a special on tv once. Some people can't leave the house unless they walk out "perfectly." They sometimes have to leave their house 10-20 times until they get it perfect. It takes all kinds of forms. It's a mental disorder and can be serious and affect people's lives. There's even medication for it.

In my cause it's just silly. It's mild and no big deal. If OCD were the flu, I would just have a sniffle in one nostril.

If the guy's a smoker, he can correct that by stopping - if he's impolite, however, then smoking is the least of his traits.

I think we agreed earlier, each to their own.

Really ?

I was going to be facetious where you said about getting into bed from the left and doing things in threes, and ask if you got in, got out, then got in again, but it sounds maybe not something to joke about.

Now you come to mention it, 'As Good As It Gets' with Jack Nicholson has something along those lines - he can't step on the gaps between flags on the pavements (sidewalks) I think it may be.

Left nostril or right nostril ?

I loved that movie and it was a perfect example about how bad it is for some. I do things like turn off the light before bed time 3 times. I only get into bed once though, as long as it's from the left side.

Lets put it this way not all smokers stink

My husband smokes and he difinately dont taste
like any astray..

His hair nor clothes nor him stinks..

I quess it depends on people and how they take another smoking..

I dont smoke..but i dont hate people that do either..

i will associate with people who do/dont..

We all have bad habits..Smoking..swearing...drinking..etc..

You know i find people that swear are unattractive and they stink..

So you can look at all these things in a different Way...

Each to their own

JMHO..No jumping on me today..my bones are sore

Unless you're perfect, don't cast that stone...

There are people who are going to find something wrong with any and everybody no matter what it is. Too short, too tall, too big, too bony, not good-looking enough, the list goes on and on.

Move on and find people who accept you for you exactly as you are, and let the world go round...
