A quote about our old friend Maslow (he died in 1970) but contributed quite a lot to motivation theory..........

"Self-actualisation, at the top of his pyramid of needs, is the state that has most fascinated followers of Maslow. What is it? Who has achieved it? Maslow helped a bit by giving a list of people he felt had reached self-actualisation: Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, William James, Albert Schweitzer, Benedict Spinoza and Aldous Huxley, as well as 12 unnamed people alive at the time Maslow did his research.

He then helped further by describing what it was that motivated people at this level. These people, he claimed, sought after truth, rather than dishonesty; uniqueness, not bland uniformity; completion, rather than incompleteness; simplicity, not unnecessary complexity; playfulness, not grim, humourless, drudgery; and self-sufficiency, not dependency."

I like the second paragraph; do you?

thumbs up thumbs down grin

A violinist MUST play the violin

A builder of pyramids MUST build his pyramids

A person whose purpose in life is to make things out of old rope finds self-actualisation through macrame............ so it is written, and so it is, and so it shall be until all the macrame devotees die and meet up in macrame Heaven - which one can only reach via 'the knowledge' gained from befriending a very wise Indian rope trick yogi!

Yes, Uli, I was at the top of the Pyramid once with Macramé ........ I had visualised this incredible piece of perfection of intricate knotted ropes - the original lengths of the pieces of rope took me from the actual hanging to down thru my front driveway gates and into the road ....... for a few days after beginning knots I could not close my front door ....... then I added the giant sized wooden beads ..... then the satellite hangings for the coconut shells ......... And the rope was bituminised for water-proofing so everything got covered in black bitumen.

Eventually I finished. And a work colleague of my then 2nd husband so admired it my then 2nd husband sold it, on the spot, for R2. (the SA equivelent of what is now about Euro 20 cents), and the happy customer drove off with my piece of the top of the Maslow Pyramid! I sat and cried giant tears into my bituminised and sticky hands........

who have gone through similar) called "Bonsai your pet"

smoky: Is that what is wrong with me? I seem to live this life of what seems a continuous Big Joke?!

No no, I swore off Macramé after that! That episode cured me! Funny enough, as a happy ending - I just have to tell anyone reading this drivvle that the girl who taught me to do Macramè is the one husband No 2 ended up marrying - for a few years - I think she drove him balmy the way she pronounced Macramé ..... she always said "Mac-Ra-May".

I love a happy ending - maybe she hung herself with her own macrame or got all 'knotted-up' and couldn't get herself undone! grin

Do you remember the macrame thing holding a pot in my parents' living room - the pot was used to hold a few photos......... I cleaned up the room and consigned the macrame and pot to the garden - I was a bit embarrassed when my son was here and my mum went on about it (it was made by my first wife who is the mother of my 'number one son') - luckily she moved on to pottery and furniture restoring and breeding stick insects........ I hope these made her life more rewarding and fulfilling than being married to me!

Nein, you are not hi-jacking Rustys thread .... Way back in about 1846 when I joined CS I had just the same thread .... So allow me to enlighten you....

Maslow invented this pyramid thing to show that unless you can breath, have food and shelter you cannot reach the next level (which is narrower than the first - like a pyramid) ... And then when you got that, you get a bit greedy and want other things, and when you got that, you get greedier and want more things ... Until eventually you get to the top of the pyramid and begin making a flower garden cause you got nothing else to do with your life ....... = Self-Actualisation. In other words, you can now Act like Yourself.... Cause you got no more worries about life.

Oh excellent! Macramés always look elegant in a garden .... and when it rots one day ... well, its just ashes to ashes and dust to dust.... and the plant (you did put a plant in it?) can just fall to earth and continue growing naturally .........cheers

Or .. Hey Roberto! What about a bird bath in it? Lots and lots of little wild birds in Gozo! Maybe you even get a Big Wild Bird visiting it?......grin
