Ok if they post on a forum it gives a wider picture but not everyone does that, so by chatting and talking you learn and find out more about each other. Online dating is not that much different to dating in real time, its just an easier way to initially find someone.
I think you should meet up reasonably quickly, its all to easy to chat online or by phone, and then create a sub conscious picture of them. Which is burst when you do eventually meet.
But the actual meeting is when you really find out if there is something worth pursuing, and even then there are no guaranties.
But make sure you meet initially in a public place and always follow your inner instincts, if you feel uncomfortable, make your excuses and run for it. IMO

Not so in many areas... I haven´t had a landline in 10 years and most of the people that I know only have cell phones. As more and more people get into I phones and blackberries etc. land lines are becoming redundant. So I wouldn´t use this as part of the criteria.
For me when I would know if the person had the potential to be the one... after we meet face to face.

one must remember one thing about "Red Flags" that Trish123 speaks of, sometimes the one that is seeing these "Red Flags" have themselves become somewhat color blind due to their past experiences.
I'm not one who will spend a whole lot of time explaining/responding or defending many of these topics that Trish123 has mentioned. I need no timekeeper or one who still has not regained the ability to trust.
I work and the last thing my employer wants to see is me taking personal calls, as for the travel advice when driving I do not use the phone (hands free or otherwise) unless its work related.
Last time I was that connected to a woman it was by an umbilical cord, not that I did not enjoy the comforts it gave me.

So you been swimming around the dating pool for a while and you decide to try the online dating thing. Lets say you finally meet someone who seems interesting, just when do you know that this could be something more, what would make you want to make more of a commitment to this person instead of throwing them back into the dating pool.
