Live in the here and now, find joy therein. Yesterday is but a memory, tomorrow but a whim. Choose to live today as if that's all there is. That's me expressing cautious optimism.
mbcasey: But there are good stories BECAUSE of religion.
Yes but that does not excuse the negative , if those people where good people they would do good things regardless of the anticipation of a pay off in some fictional after life

There are good stories because of Aesop as well... I doubt however that those have led to the mayhem and evil that accompanies religions and their stories and those that would have us think it leads to god, heaven and hell
No one expects to go to Oz, because of The Wizard Of Oz....ya know ...

I will always condem those who do harm because of their religious beliefs.
I will always pay homage to those who silently, everyday, help others because of their religious beliefs. And a "pay off" in a future afterlife may not be the reason they do good deeds.
I know you are against religion...that is fine. But there are wonderful people in the world who can use religion do do good in the world, or their little piece of it. Most religions offer ways to help others...a meeting place for people who volunteer their time and money to do good to the less fortunate.
Even if you are against religion, I hope you can compartmentalize the good from the evil. The evil must be pointed out and hopefully stopped. But the good should be applauded.
I challenge you crotalus to go to a neighborhood church and ask if you could be directed to a cause of theirs that interests you, and make a donation or do some physical contribution. You may be surprised how good the people are who participate in these actions...weather religious or not...

A wonderful entertaining book "The Wizard of Oz" is....children enjoy reading about good and evil, and how family is important.
The Bible offers many similar stories, weather you are religious or not...

I wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for the church's , when I could no longer work they fed me and my children, they took care of my heating bill so we wouldn't freeze thru the winters. I have never ever in my life been helped by an Atheist or non believer. I Have only been helped to survive by Christian people and church's. Non believers that I have been around have never once helped the poor or needy. Not any I have ever known.

crotalus_p: “It is terrible that we all die and lose everything we love; it is doubly terrible that so many human beings suffer needlessly while alive. That so much of this suffering can be directly attributed to religion—to religious hatreds, religious wars, religious delusions and religious diversions of scarce resources—is what makes atheism a moral and intellectual necessity.” Sam Harris (From "Letter to a Christian Nation) Thaik about it
thats why religion is pointless and man made JMO I dont think that is what the so called God wanted us to be

And it is tolerating those that allows moderates that allows the extremists to flourish

Ireland is one of the most secular societies in Europe and we are one of the most charitable , I know many atheist’s that work in charitable originations that have some religious afflation (not just in Ireland ) they do this because the structure for helping people is already there , How do you know that you where never helped by an atheist ???

Because the only ones that helped me always told me God bless you. I talked to every person that has ever helped me. I know by those things that they were Christians and believers. That's great that the atheist there are so much more helpful to the needy and poor. They sure aren't here.
