petalbabe: Im having to probably move abroad to get a secretarial job, even though Ive been doing it for over 20 years and am very experienced. Its the emmigration thing all over again. Very sad.

I try to be understanding, but I DO find it a tad annoying when you walk into shops these days, and struggle to find an employee who speaks English. No Irish people seem to have preference these days. Just seems so unfair, somehow..

Trouble is, back in the days of the Celtic Tiger, most "meneal" jobs had to be taken by immigrants, as the natives wouldnt take them - too lowly. Seems we are getting our comeuppance, a little. JMO

Well i know a chain of hotels who stopped hiring irish in certain depts of the hotel, not because irish wouldnt do the job, but because they could get non-irish to do the same job for a fraction of what it would have cost them if theyd hired irish.

Thats exactly my point. Unfortunately alot of Irish wouldnt work for less than a certain wage, because they hoped something better was round the corner. In the meantime, foreign people came over and snapped them up, glad of anything, even minimum wage.

Now, things are a little different, and we would too be glad of anything.

Im not advocating lowly wages, but I think in alot of cases we all got above ourselves a little a few years ago, thinking we could have anything we wanted.

Just think we all kinda set a precedent for ourselves, and now we are paying for it a little. Employers know they can get away with paying as little as possible. Now we are prepared to accept minimum wage, its too late for lots of Irish people.

also i have a friend who runs a fast food outlet- he won't hitre irish any more because every sat/sun morning they call in 'sick'. it is true that a recession will get people back to caring about doing a good job- (not saying there aren't many that will do that anyway- (but hopefully they will be the last to lose their jobs in a recession) and unfortunately , the Irish and same in scotland , have given themselves a bad reputation compared to the foreign workers)

My hours have just been cut to 10 a week!!!! apparently people don't get so sick during a recessiondoh

ciotog: What are the chances though of politicians being made to pay for their mistakes? No one held them to account at the last general election so they know they can get away with it.

Btw, welcome back emc_eile and cool to hear that you're liking self-employment.

Hope things don't get too bad in Ireland. Here in the states, it just depends on whether or not you will be affected, like a roll of the dice, I have been lucky. Good luck to you all...

YEP - The economy is in s**t - at the start of 2008 unemployment rates were just under 5% and had been in the general range or lower since 2002. Now the unemployment rate is heading for 9%, so it has almost doubled.

The national deficit for 2008 was €8,000,000,000 (8 billion). That means the government spent 8 billion more then it received in tax revenue. The reason for that is that we are all spending less. For every man, woman & child in the country that is about €1,900.

Economic forecasts are gloomy, but I have never known them to be accurate.

But listen folks all of us who lived through the 80's survived, so don't get too depressed the good times will come again. The important thing is to stay positive and healthy and don't let it get you down.
