control is freedom.... if you are trined to react iin a certain way thruout the years it is automatic i understand so willpower must be taught to the very yuong so it becomes active without thought in later years. which is when the more dangerous life altering temptations occur. but if never tempted or noknowledge of the said temptation does a trained discipline still work?? say in the act of overindulgence of a new item or pleasure...
To me its something you learn, and then have to live by.
Not always a easy task at hand, and depending on your head space it can be dificult,or it can be made easy, the choice is strickly your own. The mind and what it intails is a powerful thing, and to think we only use wee portions of it.Imagine that.
during the course of my TaiChi training i learned alot about myself, my limitations , my boundaries my vulnerabilities and my capacity and strength....
all of the different things life serves up offer me a chance to experience and thus come to own a bit of information on that particular thing...
what has proven most important is the awareness that i control nothing
but i have a choice as to how i want to either react or respond...
sometimes i simply react...auto pilot...
and sometimes i am able to respond, the key word here is able!
the ability to respond = responsibility
when i exercise that i can check my afflictive emotions and my desire nature and be flexable.....

Everyone has willpower, if they want it....
As the old priest said about celibacy..."it is a continuous decision".. I smoked for 42 years, started at 12 with 38 cent a pack cigarettes....I have been a non smoker for 5+ years....
I made a decision to be a smoker every day (numerous times) for 42 years....I've made the decision to be a non smoker every day since February 7,2001.....
You control Your mind! You WILL DO what You actually desire...
Simple.....Make an honest decision...MEAN IT! Make it a continuous one....
I think the real key to willpower is to simply want the outcome bad enough.
For example, I smoked cigarettes most of my life until I was almost 40. I knew that I always had the willpower to quit. That was never a question. The problem was that I simply didn't want to quit bad enough.
Once I finally made up my mind to seriously quit, I just did it cold turkey. No problem.
I believe that I can do anything I set my mind to. It's just a matter of wanting it bad enough. That's as simple as it gets.
Of course, finding a mate is an exception to that rule since that involves a second party. In other words, I can't FORCE a woman to love me. That's beyond my power of will.
But I have the ability to do anything that can be done with will power. Providing I have the will to desire it.
My favorite quote is "Where there's a will there's a way"
I made up my own matching phrase, "If you can't find the way you obviously don't have the will"
That should sum up any mysteries surrounding the idea of willpower.
