I just saw the ABC news Curly crying

Very sad for all those people that have lost their homes and businesses. One poor bloke said 50 years of his life 'boof' up in smoke. I really felt for him. Some people had to run into the ocean to escape the flames. Would have been scary.

I was on that peninsula only last October and it was such a beautiful place. So sad. Thank God there is no loss of human life and hope it stays that way. Same can't be said for the birds and animals as you say.

Thoughts and prayers to everyone affected sad flower

Tassie, for all of its rainfall and being so green, has always suffered during the summer months.

Vic and NSW has set down regulations about where you can now build. No trees within 50 metres of a building. So much for a rural change when you need trees to provide a bit of shade during the hot summer months.

Well said, I too am sick off these tree hugging idiots that ignore that things need to be cleaned out to prevent bush fires! Timber houses next too green trees? Which one do you think is going to go up first?

I think that anyone who votes green should have to put that on there insurance policy! That way the rest off us don’t have to pay for their stupidity!

How horrible , at least no lives were lost, homes can be rebuilt

And yes we love our great Aussie bush, people choose to live in it so they must take the chance of bush fires.

I have not watched the news for the last couple of weeks only know from word of mouth,
But we lived not far from bichino. Prob spelt wrong. And it is a lovely area.all of Tasmania is lovely.

50 meters is two close . Fires I have lit have jumped far further and not with 40 degree temp . The type of tree must make a difference as well , a place without shade is not a nice place to be in temps of 30 much less what you guys get . Plastic gutters , downpipes and the like are just waiting for a good cinder to fall on the roof .

some trees ever green like avocado can act as a heat shield, e.g take the blunt of the radiant heat proceeding a fire ball.

Lot people in the bush have sprinkler systems fed by diesel engines to water down the roof, however in the hills couple hundred yards of cleared ground still isn't likely to save you.
Best bet providing yu can get out safely is asap go to the beach

hello Robo , QE 11 rep and the council fella were talking a few years back when we were wandering around my scrub , they were saying that NZ's Karaka tree won't burn as well , not sure if it would grow in 40 degree heat though . Low temp burns and cattle would be a good thing , interesting bit in one of the National Geograficphic about burning off when it's cold to reduce the rubbish . A different mind set .

Up here were I live it is all national park, a few years ago they stopped doing the burn off in winter, said it was important for the animals to have their natural habit,

Each year the fire officers go around and check your house yard and tell you what you should do if fire approaches,
With the majority of homes up here they said you are screwed just pack what you can and leave. The bushland here is different to at the bottom of the range, but as far as I am concerned if its bush it will burn.

I just hope I am never in that situation.

A few months ago a lady was on a current affair, she had spent 10 years building her home and living in it while she did so,once completed the council said you can not live in the house as you are not far enough from the boarder fence for fire protection , it was a difference of one meter, how ridiculous,

The kid and I used too take the stinky cat for walks around the block, but after meeting a group of cats around the corner at one house he don’t like going for walks anymore? So he is now chicken cat!

We had one old lady nearly choke on her false teeth? When we walked by with the cat on a lead, she was on the phone at the time, we met the local labour MP on the corner with the cat, he was asking what breed was he? We said feral! As we are training him too be just like us! The cat not the MP,
