Spartacus2012

Spartacus Speaks

I see much from this height
grape leaves wave like nailed palms
and my toes are sprouting flies.

Here on the road from Rome to Capua
rock propped crosses tilt
every hundred feet.

My comrades and I sag on their arms
sun-blackened sacks
dragging a foul southern wind.

Crassus and his legions
marched down these cobbles months ago
leaving trash at the roadside, and us.

Now only merchants pass in groaning carts,
no longer pinching their noses
with hands over bellies, they snore

Again this wind, the sky
wipes it's greasy face
my tatters flap like rotten flags.

And I almost hear the shouts
of thousands, thunder
as my hands shred on the nails.

I drop face first in Roman dust.

Do not misunderstand
I have no regrets, a gladiator's days
are whittled on a stick.

But dreams, they rattle in the skull
like dice, even now they return.

Bony old men shaking the gate
no where else to spend the night.

UFO

I wish I could see one
A UFO
Talk to the aliens inside
Where did you come from?
Can you take me with you?
I'm tired of this blue mudball we call Earth
I have read some on UFOs
The largest one measured around 4,000 feet across
I made a UFO out of snow a few weeks ago
Now it is almost melted away
Did aliens crash in Roswell, New Mexico?
Do we owe our cell phones and computer technology to green men?
How many of them are out there?
How do you travel thousands of light years
And not have a mechanical problem along the way?
I've never seen an alien
But I've also never seen a baby pigeon
But I'll bet they exist

About this poem:
Did some reading on UFOs and have always been fascinated by this topic. Maybe some day in my lifetime they will come out of the shadows and appear on David Letterman or The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

The Eagle Will Fly

The Eagle Will Fly

Growing up since I was a young boy my Grandpa said to me,
To live my life with honor and always have integrity,
Cause one day a call may come for me to join the fight,
To defend our Constitution, for me to keep that well in sight,

They say our Constitution is outdated and so old,
All around this here nation, that’s the stories being told,
If my Grandpa was here today, he would laugh, and say that’s just all lies,
He would tell me to look at him, to look him in the eyes,

He would say to me, my boy, there’s a story I must tell,
World War Two is where I stood my ground, where others died and fell,
There was only one reason, why I would want to stand and fight,
to defend my countries honor till the dawn’s early light,

To defend the people of this land of their God given rights,
To stop the evil fiends that has power in their sights,
Don’t worry what people say to you, and the lies they have bought,
You will be honored in the end, after the good fight will be fought,

I sit here and ponder these words I believe he would have said to me,
He would be proud I lived my life with honor and integrity,
I’ll keep on talking about what people cannot see,
Even, if they keep saying its crazy and all a conspiracy.

What will it take for everyone to finally come together?
Will it take their eyes to watch that single falling feather?
That feather belongs to a symbol that represents us all,
Wondering what that feather means it’s the beginning of the call,

That symbol is perched watching silent and patiently,
Staring down at the power being wielded with impunity,
Waiting for that little spark, when everyone starts asking why?
We will start our fight for FREEDOM, when the Eagle begins to fly….

I stand alone

I am not who you say I am.
It's your vile evaluation.
Another of your "cheer me" scams
To endorse your own salvation.

How many more cheers do you expect to win
Before you're exposed, you crone?
Enjoy your reign vein Queen.
I choose to stand alone.

Disgrace

With glibness and superficial charm
She’ll flaunt her wares as though she cares.

A pathological liar who cannot love at all
Will have you believe she loves the world.

Impulsive and irresponsible she, will drive you insane
Then publically allege that you are to blame.

She has the ego of a narcissist, born to a master race
Lacking remorse, shame and guilt, she is disgrace.

should i play

On the paper the nos are
One to forty nine
Which order they want to be played
To find those lucky six

Which order will the play
I'll put pen to paper and make then in any way
Or play a lucky dip and cross my finger hope come out for me today
The chance of winning

The odds are stacked
I curse and frown having to find two pound
But maybe I'll find a few quid
Play my lotto and win a few more quid

Curling

Slide a rock down the ice
Don't those curling ladies look nice
Russians, Americans, Danish, Chinese, and English too
Turning their hand as they follow through
One has rocks of red
One has rocks of yellow
Kind of neat the Chinese were the yellow fellows
The Americans had red rocks as it matched our flag
Too bad their throws had to lag
They didn't slide and curl as good as the rest
Seems the east is better than the west
Eight rocks each to slide and bump
So far I have seen no one fall on their rump

Really enjoyed watching women's curling this past week. Hope to see much more next week too. We have several curling places in Wisconsin. Some day I'll have to make a trip and visit one.

Famine

The world is a very sad place at times to be,
many do not know of such hunger and sadness,
people do not want to be rich but just fed and free,
troubled areas in the world such madness,

Sudan a place I went back in eighty five,
working for Save the Children Fund as a coordinator,
seen so many skeletons walking or crawling alive,
images never forgotten in dreams they come much later,

When body bags have all gone,
placing lifeless children in plastic bags,
the stark darkness within sunlight they shone,
hands a shaking placing those tags,

That terrible smell of human stench,
old and young huddled together,
made your stomach really wrench,
images that remain with you forever,

looking down at that brown face and soft curls,
seeing the way they died malnutrition,
never again to feel another touch unfurled,
this is fact not dreams or superstition,

Nearly thirty years on and its still the same,
man made wars and natural disasters,
when will this world learn living life is not a game,
images of death still flash around from newscasters,

About this poem:
The world is still a terrible place to live and survive especially during troubled times, you have your own comforts and food on a table, but so many do not have this luxury and through no fault of their own suffer this indignity of dying because of no food.

Generations

Austerity measures and how it ranks,
priveleged politicians with food a plenty,
so many now going to the food banks,
is this what my generation worked for, to be so empty,

My Fathers father fought in the last war,
wounded and his very life near spent,
worked and died before his pension he saw,
austerity measures is now this intent,

Now the idea of paying more in so you gain,
sliding scale of state pension due,
how many will make the score in the 68, 70, 75 game,
in proportion to population so very few,

How blind are we to be,
this distortion to the working class,
only the rich will ever see,
politicians and governments go kiss my a**.
