gleneagle: When did the law requiring a US President to be born in the United States come into effect. It could not have been in the original constitution or else it would have rendered George Washington ineligible as he was born in England.

It's written in the Constitution:

Article II, Section I

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

I'm talking out of school here, so don't clobber me. I think, if I remember correctly, that it began around Van Buren's time, certainly after the Adams' etc... because they too were fresh from England. Also, even if born here, it wasn't The U.S. yet, so they could hardly say they were born here--oops, technical again!handshake

Only native-born U.S. citizens (or those born abroad, but only to parents who were both citizens of the U.S.) may be president of the United States, though from time to time that requirement is called into question, most recently after Arnold Schwarzenegger, born in Austria, was elected governor of California, in 2003. The Constitution originally provided a small loophole to this provision: One needn't have been born in the United States but had to be a citizen at the time the Constitution was adopted. But, since that occurred in 1789, that ship has sailed.

Well if you put it that way but he certainly wasn't born in England. The Americas have always been there.

I know, Lovie. Just havin' a bit of fun. We had to start someplace for a president, right? laugh (I don't think we'll have to worry about Arnold trying for the presidency any longer, any way..he's kinda in hot water over here. That Maria is going to cook his goose and clean his clock, and she has the back to do it.)JMOteddybear

Well that would be difficult to obtain, as there were no requirements for birth certificates then. Births were recorded in family bibles and very rarely on Census Polls. Can you imagine the fun though if someone thought that they had one?laugh

Tidepride01: I want the 2012 election to give us a leader who is not afraid to let the country know he is proud of GOD and his country.

Frankly, I think that the day after Jefferson died."they", who became 'the establishment' conveniently forgot about him and all the principles he and his generation had fought for...

Once the corrupt politicans get their consitients votes they really dould care less about the ones who put them there.

They're way to busy lining their own pockets and their cronnies with taxpayers money.I wish they had more supervision while they're in office beacuse it's become pretty darn clear that they can't be trusted.I'm sure that not many of them are all that familiar with the consitution.and to them it probably doesn't matter much to them.It would be so interesting to find out just how many of them have even read it.

RobbieM: How about just reverting to "by the people for the people.

Some useful things to add to the "To Do List"
1)Get rid of the Federal Reserve
2)Cut the military
3)Introduce sensible regulation to the financial industry
4)Reform Taxation law, to remove loopholes for corporate tax evasion.
5)Introduce real Healthcare to the populace, via real competative insurance, regardless of State.
6)Scap the proposed merger regarding closer boundaries, if thats the right word with Canada and Mexico.
7)Change foreign policy, to actually do something real to the middle east, not just pander to some wealthy lobby groups.
8)Reform the Intelligence Agencies, and flush out say 90 per cent of the "Foreign Contractors".
9)Reallocate resouces to push Americas might towards scientific development of clean, free energy.
10)Environmental cleanup. Investigate which group is conducting Geoforming, and stop this immediately.
11)Abolish the legality in marketing Genetically modified foodstuffs, at home and abroad.
12) Limit access to Government from Special interest groups, on the basis of political or financial support.

And last or not least, put an honest reputable man in the Whitehouse...one that isn't bought and payed for, one that will work for all the people, one who has actually travelled outside of the states, and specifically who will not constantly use religion, media, spin, manipulation, cover action or duplicity to stay in office.

He's definitely not the SHARPEST TOOLS in the shed when it comes to the American economy....he's doesn't know sh&t from shanoola...but, it's not his fault, he had only experience in being a community organizer ( I mean- agitator). It's ALWAYS somebody else's fault, never his fault- blah, blah, blah....
