I suppose everybody is going to hate me for this, those that already don't anyway, but I simply do not adhere to the concept of loyalty to one's country. While I appreciate how fortunate I am to be born in a Western country and to be a citizen of one of the modern, advanced Western countries, being a citizen of any one of them would be about the same as far as quality of life and potential for quality of life. Since I was about 15 I have considered and thought about the concept of patriotism and have considered myself a 'citizen of the world.' My loyalties lie with humanity, not with a certain region or government. So, proud to be an American? No, I had nothing to do with it: just an accident of birth. What is there to be proud of? Fortunate to be an American? Yes. But I would be just as fortunate to be a citizen of any other advanced, modern, Western culture. cheers

Apart from the mindless sectarianism that still exists where I live in Scotland....I am very proud to be Scottish....although I do take on board what Portiea is saying.
