I would live my normal life, do things and even date if I like someone who can now if i want it,
after all that "somebody great & loving but can't be together now"
may be just an illusion.
But i would certainly meet him when we can be together and try if he is all i imagine he is.

Keep working at resolving barriers until I know for definite its impossible, not what I want, not what he wants, or everything is resolved.

Someone great and loving does not show-up every time at your door step.
I would take the time to know him/her better and if it does not work out you will still have a friend.

If there are challenges, then it depends on the resolve of the individuals involved, as to whether they want, or feel, up to trying to change those challenges.
But, as Dan, Jac, and others have said... "if it is meant to be, it will happen", and will quite likely turn out more profound *because* of those challenges that were overcome.
There is an option in the poll "Waste of time"...
