Nikogas: I might not understand exactly but I can say that what I see is a system that even if there was or is a "great" candidate that it always comes down to maybe 2 people that we can pick from. Even those that we vote for don't get put into office by "popular" vote. And if you have 2 people and neither are what you would really want for your leader it does not matter. you still get one or the other...They say to vote so we will keep our "right to vote" so we do it because we want to believe we have a freedom. But no matter which one gets in, certain things will only change as the powers see fit....I can not define "powers" I only know that it is out of control and it has been changing for a long time. I do believe more people here are informed but even that information can be slanted and the thing to do is to just except it. Those that fight it become rebels or even guilty of anarchy if it doesn't fit the mold. So as people argue over the 2 choices they lose sight of what it would be to have that third choice,,,lol,,or even choices 4,5, or 6...
thumbs up The President of the United States is much more limited in power than most realize. GB found this out the hard way--(some may remember the news leaks regarding his tantrums when certain bills, etc... didn't "go" his way). There are approximately, at any given time, 300 men and women administering the government of the United States. The presidential office is powerful in that he is treated to celebrity status. In short, if the 300 or so administrators don't want something, it ain't happenin'.

Nikogas: Here is the income of a few Oregon leaders.Mayor Sam Adams pulled down $118,283 in the budget year that ended June 30. That’s decent pay for a region where the median income for a single person is $49,840. But it’s nothing compared with Portland police Officer Ronald Hoesly’s $173,303.

And our Senator
History of Annual Salaries - Members of Congress and Leadership

Year............. Members of Congress.....Speaker of the House

and President Pro Tempore
2011 $174,000 $223,500 $193,400

1985 $75,100 n/a n/a

Just to get an Idea of what they get. who knows what else, I don't,, but not to shabby.
I think it's interesting to note that routine non-collegiate jobs with the Federal Government (such as File Clerk, Typist, Office Assistant) might require a H.S. graduation or G.E.D. but often pay as much or more than a Medical Assistant, LPN, or grade school teacher. These positions are dwindling, however. "Pay" in the United States has never made complete sense. A care-giver with some technical skills makes far below the guy or gal who bags your groceries. Just saying...

jono7: yup, i think the train left a long time ago...and is picking up speed.

closer to home,....as of last week, 31,000 folks had called elections canada to report that king harper's minions had used robocalls, or called in person to advise folks their polling station had moved during our last election to prevent them from voting.

and from the Vancouver Observer/Canadian Press:

"The Conservatives are being accused of buying victory in the 2006 election that brought Stephen Harper to power, after pleading guilty Thursday to exceeding their campaign spending limit and failing to report all advertising expenses.

On Thursday, the party and its fundraising arm pleaded guilty of spending more than the $18.3-million legal limit and of filing an election return that failed to report all the expenses it incurred.

In a plea bargain, the party pleaded not guilty to more serious charges of wilfully contravening the act and all charges were dropped against four top party officials who implemented the so-called in-and-out scheme to finance radio and television advertising during the 2006 campaign."

as well, not elections...but painted with the same harper brush:

harper is muzzling our scientists from speaking publicly:

One of the world’s leading scientific journals has criticized the federal government for policies that limit its scientists from speaking publicly about their research.

The journal, Nature, says in an editorial in this week’s issue that it is time for the Canadian government to set its scientists free.

OTTAWA — A dramatic reduction in Canadian media coverage of climate change science issues is the result of the Harper government introducing new rules in 2007 to control interviews by Environment Canada scientists with journalists, says a newly released federal document.

from CTV news on line:

"And two weeks ago, the Canadian Science Writers' Association, the World Federation of Science Journalists and several other groups sent an open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, calling on him to loosen the restrictions on government scientists and researchers."

Its ridiculous Jo...Time for Captain caveman and his conservative cronies to be on their way already wine

RayfromUSA: Given that one percent of the American population controls 42% of the nation's wealth, it should be apparent to all that the laws and the political system are stacked to favor the ruling minority.

It should also be apparent that it is impossible to ever change that situation through political means.

If politics really worked the current situation would never have developed.

it is even worse in UK mate. 5% control 95% of the wealth.
and dear Mr cameron , the UK mp, recently cut the taxes on the rich and added it to the pensionersdoh

(my opinion) Yes the politicians are predetermined years in advance and although it seems wrong I believe its due to the extreme problems that we face on earth right now. In order to set a course of action to save the earth we need a strict game plan.
Im hoping this is why elections are fixed but its could simply be greed. I got the fake call from elections Canada but Im not one of the few (31000) poeple that complained. So I dont vote not even for my union(CAW) which is another story.
