So this topic came up in the 'whats on your mind thread' and created a bit of interest.

Whats your opinion on hunting animals? By the most common means which, generally is using a firearm.

Have you ever hunted? Would you hunt? Do you take exception to it??

When I was younger I went hunting with my father and uncles. But don't do it now. No real interest in it. But I see no problem with it. People have done it since we were on this planet.

I used to hunt, for well over 20 years, but haven't in a decade or so, just lost interest. dunno

I prefer to eat the animals alive now, it's a little more sporting when they can bite back. laugh

i have hunted on horseback and foot with/without dogs and while the thrill of the chase is all well and good i preferred the scented hunts where there was no animal killed at the end of it for sport. the whole hunting to live thing is fine with me though

Spot on mate! Ladies, you seeing this, this is a man!! handshake laugh

Seems 'I take exception to it!' is winning. Can someone who voted that way offer me a viewpoint on their choice?? If you think about it, meat has to come from somewhere, it doesnt magically appear as nicely prepared and packaged steaks or fillets in the butchers, it was once a living creature too. Whats the difference between hunting and killing animals on an industrial scale?

Big problem there is the people who look on these items as fashionable and demand them. The hunters are merely trying to live. It is a little hypocritical of us to point to these people as bad when it is usually people from the West who demand these items. What will the hunters do without the money? If you had a choice to kill an animal to feed your kids, or let them starve, what would you do?

Ugh, bloodsports? I probably should have clarified that I'm certainly not in favour of that, a pack of dogs chasing a fox or dear and tearing it asunder if caught?! Whats gained by that? But pure satisfaction of the kill, not for any real purpose.

using a dog/horse is as much part of hunting as using a gun. i only ever went on one hunt with both dogs and horses and would never do it again. iv got two springers who were used for hunting before but only as flushers for pheasants. i dont agree with hunting an animal for the sport of it by any means

In Thailand, you can buy a cow and then go out into the wild, pick from a selection of weapons and blow the animal up! Now that is going a bit far!

Seems a bit too chaotic and a throw back from the days of grandior, 'tally ho ol' chap' and all that laugh Thats just an activity, as apposed to man and gun, hunting rabbit, pheasent, deer etc for food or as a means of vermin control on a farm.

I went hunting with my father and uncles as a teenager and loved the skill and natural feeling of hunting. I just rise birds and flush game these days, still get the thrill of working dogs and being in touch with nature without wasting bullets and shot. I went foxhunting a few times and still go to the hunt meetings as a social event, nowadays it is drag hunting and just as enjoyable. A pity we no longer hunt foxes in the traditional way when the fox had a fair chance of getting away, because people have to shoot the foxes now to keep their numbers in check, otherwise they would over run the country. Same with deer , no natural predator in Ireland so they have to be culled, even the deer in the Pheonix Park have to be shot every year or so to keep their numbers down for humane reasons.

That is something that struck me also, that 'being at one' almost with nature.....ok, you're at a bit of an advantage with having a gun, but do you think if animals could make a gun they wouldnt?!! wow Sneaking through dew covered fields at the break of dawn, not a sound to be heard....'tis grand.

It is part of being human, skinning and preparing an animal or fish you have caught yourself is natural , we are returning to our hunter gatherer roots, like gathering field mushrooms or hazelnuts and berries. They seem to taste better than we enjoy them more.thumbs up

irishminxi: Depends on the size

The calibre you mean??

Well, depends on what you like! You can have a breech loader that loaded from the action end or a muzzle loader which is loaded at the mouth of the barrell and rammed down with a ramrod then, bit old skool......but looks like fun! grin laugh
