Since you are looking for the sponsor of Charles Guiteau, if there was one, you could look at his choice of firearm. He never had any experience with firearms, yet he chose a 44 British Bull Dog revolver. This caliber as a high recoil and is a very destructive caliber. Since it has a short barrel, he would have to know that he had to be close. It wouldn't have been efficient for his purpose at too great of a distance.
