Metal music is great! Much better than American teenage pop-music. Metal music, including much darker metal music like black and dark metal are also pretty popular in the Nordic countries.
I don't know what are the reasons for its popularity, maybe it's just so good
CuddlingSoul: Metal is good while having to endure the harsh northern European winters. Metal increases circulation and blood flow... They would freeze to death, listening to Barry Manilow.
The more safe and boring the area the more metal fans you find in it. Most heavy metal fans are dorks from the sleepy places(often posh sleepy places). And Finland is the ultimate pleasant land where nothing happens and people don't do anything fun or have any personality.

My guess is that in Finland there a lot of people still pissed off because their parents didn't buy them that Nintendo/Playstation/Xbox for Christmas.
Metal is the music of White middle class virgins who can't dance or play sport and were likely bullied at school. If hip hop & R n B were street and cool, then metal is the suburban and dork opposite.

Basically metal fans come from the same place - physically, mentally and emotionally - as emos and hipsters. And these days I would say that many would-be metal fans have been absorbed into the emo/hipster fold.

Maybe this is just a joke but I don't see that it is any cooler to be a rapper than heavy metal musician. Those funny gangsta rappers are like little thoughies from the school when comparing them to "real" black metal musicians. They are/were very dark people.

If watching some one do a thing, is in some small way like doing that thing yourself, maybe members of the more polite/civil cultures have more need to vicariously express aggression.

It's funny that people are saying that there is nothing to do in Finland. Of course if you do not want to find anything to do, sure you cant find it. It's the same if I say that there is nothing to do in England, just drink a beer and watch football.
