BebeII: Whether or not you see sense in my posts reflects entirely on you. Try to remember that when these industries were created, they also brought jobs to local people who earned far more at those jobs. After having given rights to western oil companies, they were legally in error to renege on those contracts. OPEC is a cartel which meets to set prices beneficial only to them-a monopoly in other words, something we have laws against. Colonization is a different situation from official contracts. Perhaps you could stand to read more history.

So, I meant the time when western companies like West, East Indian Companies, which were first to start their blood business in Africa, Asia and South America, considered only their own wealth and it was so till the end WW II.
If you know history well enough and this was posted in this thread many time regarding Muhammad Mussadiq, who was appointed Iranian Prime Minister in April 1951. Mussadiq had two goals in mind, nationalizing Iranian oil from Britain and democratizing Iran against unequal agreement with Britons. The United States in the beginning supported Mussadiq, mediating the transitioning oil control from Britain’s Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) to the nationalized Iranian oil. A year earlier, the United States revised its global policy and gives birth to NSC- 68 “renewed initiative in the Cold War- increase in military and economic aid to countries along the Sino-Soviet Border.” Mussadiq with his democratic revisions of Iran quickly fell out of favor with the West. Ultimately with the rise of the Iranian Tudeh party who were sympathetic to Mussadiq. This party was a liability to US and Britain policy because of its likelihood of falling into Soviet control. The CIA and British intelligence planned several coup d’états to eventually remove Mussadiq with the Shah of Iran’s help and put General Fazollah Zahedi as Prime Minister in 1953. The Shah of Iran was known as a despot to the people of Iran and resented American involvement with the overthrow of Mussadiq and his assination

OPEC is a cartel that controls the oil production and prices now, but do not forgett that it was created by western european countries and US years ago to control the prices of oil because of the fear of the communists.
What if they finaly smarter than their creators and are now independent (like many others - Sadamm Husein - Bin Laden - ...)nobody has the right to complain about the mess he created.
Just my opinion...dunno

Exactly! America is EASILY (and I do mean EASILY) the most benevolent country in the history of man, in many areas. The incessant whines from the ingrates are par for the course, and will happen whenever America is the proverbial big fish in the tank.

So we're constantly reminded, though the CIA overthrew him to help the British.

OPEC was not created by the CIA-in fact the CIA thought so little of OPEC as an organization that they devoted very little time or analysis to it. I didn't realize we created Hussein or Bin Laden!laugh You need to stop believing the propaganda that flies around the ME.

I was not talking about CIA at all i was talking about western governments who build OPEC because they had the fear of USSR controling the oil prices.
I do not mention Saddam any more because he is dead. Bin Laden is a creation of CIA and this is a fact not propaganda. The money to build his network was comming from there. bouquet

How could the U.S.S.R. control oil prices if the oil fields were run by western corporations? OPEC was created by Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela to guarantee income as against fluctuating prices set by the oil companies. The CIA financed shipments of missiles and helped to train the Mujahadeen (sic) but never paid OBL-he had plenty of his own money and backing from Saudi sponsors.

Let's see, the US defeat FASCIST Japan in WW2, then after the war, the US REBUILDS JAPAN, INTRODUCES DEMOCRACY AND CAPITALISM (that has resulted in the #2 economy in the world). The US runs perpetual trade deficits with Japan, and how are we giving $1, taking $10??

Among some nations, their ruling powers, and a majority population of support blinded of their propaganda, "yes", America is one of the most hated nations in the world. The results of a me, me, me, radical agenda that has completely aborted the ability of its people to act responsibly for the people. We became the most responsible, and admired nation in the world with a population that actually took their own time, spent their own money, and built an America allowing everybody to have equal opportunity in doing the same. Not a gift, but a stepping stone that all could take advantage of, while producing, and protecting the ability of others to do the same. An ability that is now controlled by progressive political powers, their moneyed factions (with our money), and the opportunities they take of their own personal prosperity.

The nations that hate us, the people that hate us, hate the image of the me, me, me, selfish progressives aborting the life, and limb, of America.

ayrshie: The suggestion that America is a hated country in this day and age is beyond belief. America is defending Europe against these islamic nutcases that go around the world blowing people up cos lets face it our EEC partners nor NATO have the balls to do it. The UK and the US stand up for freedom. The person who initiated this post should ask themselves a few simple questions such as what happens when the mental cases running north Korea decide to spit their dummys and launch a nuclear strike. Who will the west turn to if islamic fundametalists such as Iran develop the capability to launch a nuclear strike on Israel.
I suggest you all look around the world and see what is going on before you judge the USA. George Bush created a lot of problems for the US but he is a thing of the past. One thing you must become aware of is that we need the USA more than they need Europe.
Every islamic country in the world that has conflict within their borders have all got one thing in common. They are all killing each other with Russian and Chinese weapons.
I honestly worry that my grandchildren will witness a major nuclear strike in the middle east within the next 30 years and at that stage who will Europe turn to.
Do not ever underestimate the importance of the USA against any threats the west faces in the coming years. In my book the USA are trusted, loyal and important allies in the defense of the free world. Do not ever make the mistake of thinking otherwise.

There are actions we take which deserve criticism, no doubt. I just wish it was based on an appreciation of the difference between public and private actions. Many of the "meme's" written about the subject are based on the ida that corporations act in the name of government or by the writ of government when they are private entities. How colonialism started is a case in point.

I agree that in MOST cases, we have no right to interfere in other countries at all. However, I do believe there are times when a portion of the people in a said country asks for help on their behalf, (as certain lobbies do), that it makes it much harder to ignore the domestic policies of the government in question. The Eastern Bloc nations under communism, ethnic groups being discriminated against or harrassed, etc. These are reasons why we get pulled into situations we would rather not be in.

The problem is there is good and evil in the world, and while America is far from perfect, look at how America has been the lead against evil, on many occasions. I really wish the US didn't have to play "World Police" for cost reasons alone, but who else would be able to do it? The UN? Talk about pathetic, as the many times that the UN should have used military force to intervene, they naturally didn't. When the US Marines had control of Somalia, there was calm, and as soon as the UN "peacekeeping" forces took over from the Marines, all hell broke loose. (The two times the UN has authorized force, Korea and Kuwait, it was the US who led the charge on both occasions.)

Yes, the U.N. has been said to get in the way of a clear victory as well-We stopped after we pushed Hussein's troops out of Kuwait instead of going to Baghdad to end the regime for good. It would have saved many lives in the interim if we had done so, but because the allies "mandate" didn't include regime change, Hussein was left in power for another 12 years and the people their suffered enormously-both the southern Shia and the Kurds who opposed him. The sanctions regime was also used by Hussein to deny his people medicine and food, which of course was blamed on us.
