I think you do pay extra for the name. I have some co-workers that throw around brand names and I have to say that I have no glue what the hell they are talking about. Primary because Im not interested in fashion. I were what I think looks good on me and if that means I went to Goodwill to buy it so be it.
lion131: do you think designer stuff is worth the high price,or not?are you just paying extra for the 'name'?

yes,we should all wear what we like! .anyway, you could buy 10 items for the price of 1 of those designer items!
I answered no. At the same time, I often buy designer clothers, mostly 'George', an Australian label. Having said that, I have just about always bought at sale time, such as 50% off end of season sale. I bought an Armani skirt, the one made in Italy not Taiwan, and it was reduced from $1200 to just over $300. I snapped it up as it was my size and it's gorgeous.

somechick: I love to sew I make my own clothes anyway.
Good for you. Great if you can draft your own. It's fabulous isn't it? I used to years ago, when I had time. Vogue patterns were around then, many of the good designers are no longer available. Once I made a silk shirt for my brother. He loved it.

Yes I find sewing to be lots of fun. When my sons were little I made them all their baby blankets/quilts.Since the baby outfits were too expensive I used to make them as well.
Now that they're grown and out of the nest now I make my own curtains and throw pillows for my apt.

tell them to try the secondhand stores and get them dirt cheap
Let's put it his way: If you had any idea how much work goes into a real designer garment, they are worth a LOT of money. Also count in the money the fashion houses have to dish out to have a factory full of crack sewing experts from Europe, all the expenses of running a factory, the expense of hiring models and putting on a runway show, and the expense of custom making clothes for rich ladies who are never satisfird because they hate their own bodies.
But in reality land, a work suit from Wal Mart or The Community Thrift Store is good enough for me.
