Which of the following common statements is grammatically correct ?
I couldn't care less
or
I could care less
To me it would be the first one which infers that you have reached the absolute limit of caring, there is no lower you can go whereas the latter phrase suggests there is some caring currently going on and the limit has not yet been reached .....
I've notice that Americans predominately use could so I'm just interested to see what the RoW ( Rest of World ) thoughts are on this, hence the 4 poll choices.
So I looked it up, because I have used both. Here is what I found:
Clichés are especially prone to scrambling because they become meaningless through overuse. In this case an expression which originally meant “it would be impossible for me to care less than I do because I do not care at all” is rendered senseless by being transformed into the now-common “I could care less.” Think about it: if you could care less, that means you care some. The original already drips sarcasm, so it’s pointless to argue that the newer version is “ironic.” People who misuse this phrase are just being careless.

I always seem to care to much, so the phrase I could careless is probably more suited to what I would be thinking... if that makes sence although we normally SAY that I couldn't when in fact allot of us probably could If you get my drift

Indeed! "Couldn`t" is more often the safer option in many cases as it relieves of responcibility. Excuse heaviness.

....Now don't you go getting your pretty little knickers in a twist about it ...... that would be careless .....
I do get your point though ....... the expression can be used too frivolously at times ....
