I watched a few of the hoarder shows and I feel that they are traumatizing the people because they expect them to get rid of everything all at once. With my friend, we got rid of a little bit at a time. She is now starting to get rid of things on her own.

I agree. Too fast too soon ( geez, I realise how that sound ) But you can't change a person like that. The impulse of throwing away unneeded items or giving them up needs to be instilled, not shoved down someone's throat.

Well............seeing as I am unexpectedly stuck in my home here instead of in the Uk, I should be getting on with some of the things on my 'To do' list, not on here. The list includes - Go through all wardrobes, drawers and the very small understairs cupboard, and have a clearout.
I moved from a fairly large 3 bedroomed house, to a small two bedroomed house, and then here to Spain. I still have 6? 8? packing cases in one sister's garage (that is full with all their stuff) and a suitcase of clothes at another sister's.

They need to learn what is needed and what is important. Most of it is based on fear. I read an article where a women died from suffication because her stuff fell on her and there was nobody to help dig her out. Another family had a fire and they barely escaped with their lives. The man of the house was severly burned and they lost all their pets. The fire crew had a hard time getting in their house to help them. It is good to have things for emergency purposes, but sometimes too much is too much. My friend is getting better. I've been trying to help her think though the toss/keep process.

I feel it is better to go though it a little at a time, such as a drawer here, a closet there. Have a giveaway box while you are looking though stuff, and once that is filled take it to a charity. Some people dump everything out of a closet, drawer etc or run out and get a ton of bins and then they become tired and throw everything back, or they go to put something away and that drawer if full as well. You would be surprised what you can accomplish when you consistently chip away at it a little at a time. My friend said she felt so much better after she got rid of the excess stuff.
Veritaas: Not when you have been hoarding for over 20 years, tossing does not even come intot the equation, that would be like suggesting to a religious fanatic that Jesus was actually Satan!
Veritaas: All depends on what context it is said in, but on this occasion not bad. It is used losely here in the UK but can offend some people, again depending on the situation and how well you know the person.
It generally refers to somebody who pulls their wire furiously on a regular basis.
Pulls there wire? You mean like jerking their chain?
LoveMovies: We love packrats. They are so darn interesting.
For me it's not so much being a pack rat, as it is something to do, that I find interesting.
Also while collecting vehicles, parts, pieces of interesting mechanical junk, I've managed to meet some some wonderful people along the way.
Also learned a lot about how things work, and it's a continual process. Still trying to figure out how to build a nuclear reactor in my back yard without anyone noticing.
LoveMovies: I noticed pack-ratism is pretty prevalent in the USA. You walk down any street during the summer when people have there garages open, and you can tell that they might be pack-rats. Some do not have room for their cars. I wonder if this is the case in most other counties.
Hey movies from down under
I have up to a dozen dogs here on any given day... my garage is
used as a dog den and canine gym with 2 pet treadmills and
agility equipment for enrichment
am I a pack-rat? Hey does part of a pack count?
Well I run a doggy holiday and day care frm hm and I do tend to
have a lot of dog stuff
must get to throwing out the empties that are like lingering
