When did American become English? I have to acknowledge that there's a common root to the language, but ever since the British won the American War of Independence for them, the Americans have developed something that less and less resembles English.
Some of it they have tried to export back to the UK, including computer systems that wanted to put a 'z' in place of every other 's' and couldn't even spell centre. And of course we have been swayed in places by some of the Hollywood output. But in general, the languages have grown apart.
The fact that you have had to explain to the Americans that pants are underwear and not trousers is a moot example.
So who should take their pants off? Anyone who thinks that pants are trousers should be forced to go commando and abandon any trousers, slacks, shorts, jeans, skirt, frock or dress they may also be wearing at the time.

.
There are two English languages...American English and British English...it's an accepted fact.
We won that war? News to me....seeing that we surrendered and/or lost it in 1783.

Language is only a part of what a person is and it can be learned I bet you speak several languages but to be nice to be kind and to respect people's culture(language included) is something that it not easy to learn, is it?

In the deep south, underwear is sometimes referred to as "skivvies." Hands are referred to as "skinners."
Hence, the expression, "Get your skinners out my skivvies."
ChasingCars: I don't want to get into a big historical debate here as I have to go and get my kit off as instructed by Ms Cheeky. However...
George was a very unpopular King and a German. He distrusted his British soldiers intensely as they had sympathies with the British settlers. So, he employed Swiss mercenaries to go and fight the British settlers. The British settlers won. Later it was called the American War of Independence of course as quite rightly, having beaten off the German's troops, the British wanted independence from him.
King George III was born in London. His Father and Mother were German..but he was born in England, so not a true German per say...but that is a minor and irrelevant point.
So, you are saying that the American War of Indepenence was between British settlers and Swiss mercenaries?
Never heard of their involvement, but hey, I do enjoy learning.
