Medsummer: Found a wallet with a few hundred dollars in it one time. Kept the money and returned the wallet. He had no business loosing it in the first place inside an airplane where he was working. If the airplane had crashed because his wallet had jammed a control mechanism that would not have been too good. Actually got a letter back from the guy who agreed and hoped we enjoyed the beer!
Talk about designing the thesis around the required result!
Na I would ring the owner and hand it back, because it's the right thing to do.I live with my conscience every day

If it turned out the guy needed the money he would have gotten it back if he asked for it. As it was, it was better for him that things went through back channels as opposed to doing it like your supposed to, he would have gotten into serious trouble otherwise. Look at the alternative, if that airplane crashed and people were killed. As it was, everyone knew about it, but it was a wait and see how he would react if he were to get into trouble or not.
Thats interesting there must be an overly honest group of people. This was done with a cell phone set up as a plant tosee how many would keep and how many would turn it in, and only 60% of people turned it in

Yes, and there have been a couple of funny tv shows where they set up a $100 note which was a fake folded in half. I think it is different if it's cash or a cell phone (I know coz I lost mine at my son's school recently and it was NOT returned)... I would return the wallet coz can't help thinking how upset I would be if it was mine! What goes around comes around!
Look for a man looking for his wallet.....and run the other way!
I never would do that!
I would look to see if someone was looking for it and then question them to see if it was theirs. I feel responsible to the true owners to care for their wallet and protect it.
I would look for ID and contact and question them to see if they are the owner.
If none could be found. I would inventory and photocopy all. Then turn it over to the police. After it was returned by the police....I would get contact information and call them to see if they recieved all contents.
If the police steal the money....it is on their head.....I did the correct thing. I am no worse than before I found it.
Honesty first for the sake of the soul!
Lost items are sure not yours.....they still belong to the one who lost them.
I found some money once belonging to someone else (about $60). My first reaction was to keep it but I ended up returning it. It didn't feel right keeping the money.

If you do right in small things....you can be trusted with the bigger!
Calliopesgirl: I have found a wallet and i immediately returned it and the guy looked inside to see if all his money was there and didn't even thank me when he discovered it was! Iwould do the same thing again, though. It's not my money.
bought some stuff from a lady once, she owned a small grocery. and i was a good distant from the place when i realized she had given me too much change. I walked all the way back and returned her money, she didn't thank me either. not too long after, a crocodile ate her and a cround of people watched helplesly. the police shot the croc but they never read him his rights. her remains were burried and the funeral was one of the biggest cround in my town
I found a wallet last week with some wet papers and an id that i didn't recognize. in Jamaica, you are given an ID for free the first time but if you lost it the second one cost $800, so i took it to my shop and showed it to folks to see if anyone knew the fellow and eventually i found him and he was rejoicing the whole time so much that it makes me feel proud

I did the same and thought -- what if the person is really desperate for the money and has kids to feed.
heatherhuntsman: I would see if their was an id. then turn it in to PoliceDuH
there was a group of kids i grew up with walking home from school when i was about ten, a little girl maybe about six at the time found a wallet with some cash. everybody there thought it was best to hand it over to the police, we did and the poolice gave the founder some and kept the rest. it was so long ago yet i never forgot.
hand it over to a responsible party, if it was lost in a store, to their customer service dept., if it was found on the sidewalk, well the police would be the best to deal with that..
To be honest, I'd return a wallet intact to its owner not just because it's the right thing to do but because the ID makes it more personal and I'd feel I was robbing someone!
However, if I found cash, assuming it wasn't thousands, I'd most likely keep it as I wouldn't trust anyone I passed it on to, to necessarily been honest.
