BurninInAZ: this was an argument between me and my buddy the other day
I have found a wallet and i immediately returned it and the guy looked inside to see if all his money was there and didn't even thank me when he discovered it was! Iwould do the same thing again, though. It's not my money.
I did find a purse a few years ago, looked inside and dropped it to the address on a card.
I remember my dad lost his pay packet years ago, when ppl were paid in cash, he and my Mam were frantic about how they would manage that week and have been broke enough times to know what thats like. Not my money and I couldnt sleep if I didnt return it.
I got paid one week in 50's. Folded them and put them in my wallet. Went around town etc etc. Got home and realised I'll lost them Went back everywhere, talked to everyone but no luck. A few weeks past and a local guy turned up. I knew the guy was having money problems but was completely taken back when he returned my money. Had been sitting in the hardware car park covered in dirt. I know the world is full of twats but completely restored my faith lol SO yeah I'd return it, even if I had to go completely out of my way.
I've been on both ends of this. Once I actually left my entire PURSE in a shopping cart in a parking lot and drove off. GASP! Some honest person took it to customer service and I got it back untouched.
Likewise I was getting gas one day and saw someone's billfold sitting on top of the pump - it was stuffed, you could see cash and credit cards bulging out. I took it (untouched) inside to the cashier, then later had a bad feeling that they probably didn't do the honest thing with it from there. Kinda wished I had opened it and found a way to call the owner but I just didn't want to invade it and possibly be falsely accused later of something missing.
1:00a.m. True Story - in the ladies room stall at a night club, saw a cigarrette case on the floor, picked it up and saw it had about $55 cash stuffed inside. Went around to various employees to inquire if anyone had reported a lost pack of cigs and if so what else was in there. No luck. Left my phone number with them to call and if someone described it I'd give it back. Never got the call. So I gave the money to a lady who needed it for cancer treatment.
How was it that you knew the Amex had such a high spending limit?
Most card 'styles' represent what kind of program they are enrolled in, not what their actual limit is?
And- If I thought I could return it myself, I would, because I wouldn't trust a random stranger, even if it's a cop, to do the right thing anymore than I would trust myself.
BurninInAZ: cops aren't any less susceptible to being corrupt scum bags anymore than anyone else. ...
Though I have a couple of good cop friends, unfortunately you're absolutely right.
I'd return it, if I was able to discover the owner. Otherwise, I'd hang on to it for about a yr. Then if I really needed money, use some & prob. give the rest to a charity.
Of course, in the case of a credit card, I could possibly Discover the owner right away.(Just saw the Discover card ad pop up right after writing the word discover.. man those guys at Google are quick!)

I was Working on my Job at a Supermarket this Week Found 2 Wallets and Returned One Wallet to the Owner and I Returned the 2nd Wallet into Customer Service on My Job and Both Owners of the Lost Wallets gave me a Reward and Doing the Right Thing Shows the World that if The World Does the Right thing Then we will Live in a More peaceful World and Ive felt Great to see that The People felt Better That Ive Found their Wallets and it Brings a Good feeling Inside of me when the people are Relieved That my Honesty Towards them feels Good if I Do the Right Thing all the Time . I left 130 euro inside my flip phone,on the back of toilet at a water park last summer, realising 20 mins later,I called my phone and someone had handed it in to the front office, money intact..
I was so relieved! If I found a wallet I'd find anyway I could to return it,as far as I am concerned the feel good factor of returning it,would far outweigh the guilty spending of someone else's money.

sometimes a wallet is worth more to the owner than the value of the money inside, i had mine returned to me a couple of times and always wouldn't consider doing anything else to someone else's property.
unless of course it belonged to bill gates - that would be an interesting find!

Found a wallet with a few hundred dollars in it one time. Kept the money and returned the wallet. He had no business loosing it in the first place inside an airplane where he was working. If the airplane had crashed because his wallet had jammed a control mechanism that would not have been too good. Actually got a letter back from the guy who agreed and hoped we enjoyed the beer!
