Proudamerican100: I don't believe in any organized religion. I also don't believe in shoving my beliefs down anothers throat. But I do believe in something out there bigger than myself. Be it Mother Nature, the trees, people from another universe I call him God. Don't understand him much but I just know there is a reason for all of this.

I agree but I don't get involved in these arguements because the threads are invariably hijacked by angry bullies on either side who are so insecure that they can't accept that others do not share their beliefs.

I have conviction in my beliefs and faith in my Higher Power and have no need to prove anything to anyone.wave

yep, them and trolls.
My own thoughts are to not believe in any of the "organized religions and anyone who spouts a religious theme" into their words.
What gets me is if you look at some unknown native tribe in the middle of no where that has never seen any man outside of their group they have a way of looking at the world around them, spirit in the woods and sky and those thoughts.
Then go all the way to the other side of the planet and find another tribe of natives who never saw anyone to speak of outside of their group and you know these two tribes have never seen each other at all. Yet, the way they both look at life and the spirit world the beliefs have a similarity about them.

While I definitely do not believe in the organized religions I do believe in the power of prayer and I think when you get a group of people all thinking good about something the energy of that group has either a positive effect upon the focus of that prayer. I believe it ties into the energy of the planet and all living things.

If you really want faith, you'll have to find it yourself. Nobody can do the spadework for you. But somehow I don't think you have that in mind at all.

And FYI Stephen Hawking expects us to believe that matter appears from nothing using something they call String Theory and that the same particle can exist in more than one place at the same time. But like you with faith, I can't really be bothered putting in the legwork to understand it.comfort

because some people need to hope for something better to come to struggle through life. Some sort of strength amidst trials, poverty, depression. They have such hopeless lives that when something good happens they see it as divine intervention. They need a bridge to reach the "divine grace" that "guides" them.

Yeah true, the argument towards the big bang can be said that something cant come from nothing.
but it can be a reversed question as in then how did 'god' come to be, out of nothing ?

hence why we have theorys.
some are deemed true, others constantly being rewritten.

yer the big bang theory dose say that the universe came from a single point but string theory is alot different and as for particles being at more than one place at the same time thats quantum mechanics and thats a proven fact but both side require a bit of a leap of faithlaugh

katt1017: I suppose I'm suppose to be impressed and cowed by the above?

Let's have a peek at the post I responded to for some examples of rude behavior, shall we?
Let me put this in terms simple enough you might be able to grasp them:

If you throw rocks at someones house you should not be surprised when one or two of them come back at you.

Simple enough?

Now I realize that the stereotype Christian is supposed to "turn the other cheek" when a fake intellectual starts their bigoted little rants. Sorry, but I refuse to live by your script. You got what you gave. If you see that as unfair, welcome to the real world.

Feel free to try to spin what you've said already and put words in my mouth all you like. All anyone has to do is page back through the thread to see what was really said.

Go ahead make yourself look like a fool. Save me the work of doing it.

There is nothing rude about saying people who believe in religion are weak. If you found it offensive, then I can only say it was not meant to be offensive. It is my opinion based on observation - and I have tried to explain the source of my opinion honestly. You are free to make a well thought case for the opposite.

If you disagree with someone, I think the best place to start would be to dismantle and discuss targeting the flawed thinking rather than just blurting out reactionary cliches like 'bigot', 'loudmouth', 'rant', 'fool', 'prejudice', 'fake intellectual' to anything you happen to disagree with.

I think the film 'Signs' summed it up best.

"People break down into two groups. When they experience something lucky, group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck. Just a happy turn of chance. I'm sure the people in group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way. For them, the situation is a fifty-fifty. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they're on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah, there are those people. But there's a whole lot of people in group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they're looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel that whatever's going to happen, there will be someone there to help them. And that fills them with hope. See what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you? "

Jihadmeathello: I think it is unwise to say it is just fear. I used to be a christian and remember when I became "born again". It was an incredibly powerful experience. I no longer felt alone, I had a path and guidelines of how to be a good and happy person. Most of what was taught was about love and understanding. Even if I read the red letters of the new testament, I still get that feeling.

The allure of religion is potent, and I think people should understand it before calling someone stupid for believing it. You are given all the answers to life so long as you can keep faith in those answers that are provided. Later, the fear portion of religion was introduced to me. That is when it started to unravel and I began asking the questions to where slowly it no longer made sense.

I later came to the realization that being good and morale can be done out of compassion for my fellow man and natural want to elevate my species. It makes more sense then to have that approach than to do it out of fear of punishment. For to me what matters is the actions of a person, how they practice their beliefs, not what those beliefs are.

So, I would be reluctant to merely pass religious people off as stupid. I may think they are wrong, but they feel a genuine sense of belonging and feel as if they are not alone. That is a very powerful feeling and will admit it is the one part of being a christian I miss. I just know too much stuff and have too many questions that will no longer allow me to have faith.

I also think people may choose not to believe out of fear of what they don’t know don’t understand and an unwillingness to be open and understanding. I think people may be so afraid of something being pushed upon them they are just closed to any religious beliefs at all.

KarmaInitiative: I think you made the mistake of assuming that I have no faith whatsoever. I am absolutely open to the concept that there may be something 'greater' than me. So I cannot be by your definition 'an opinionated loudmouth with a prejudice against anyone who believes there is something greater than me in the universe', as this would mean I would be prejudice against myself.

In a universe so complex, I believe a free mind will find its own very personal and absolutely unique reasoning for our existence and even at our death we should be satisfied that this will not be perfectly complete since there are things we cannot ever phyically perceive or comprehend.

Mass worship of a single deity is for those who stopped trying to question and consider everything by themselves. They chose to build their reasoning based on faith that a set of prescribed reasonings were correct and not to be challenged.

From my perspective, faith therefore constitutes a box around the human mind that is preventing or inhibiting complete free thinking that will ultimately teach us more about the true nature of the universe.

Your immediate reaction was to aggressively defend your faith by being rude to me based on poor understanding of who I am and what I believe. Ironically, it is also one form of the evidence you have asked for. The mind that relies on faith is weak and reactionary when challenged with philosophy that returns an error from the faith processor. It intrigues me that people who preach love and tolerance one moment can then be so nasty and defensive.

I find you reply amazing since what you are saying is absolute contradiction to your 1st post.

KarmaInitiative: Relgions are fairytales for those who are too weak to accept that we cannot ever possibly comprehend the meaning and essence of the existence of a single grain of sand on a mile wide beach let alone the existence of ourselves.

interesting ideas here....but the distinction you are making is between those who respond to phenomena by applying the knowledge they have accumulated and those who decide to imbue the phenomenon with something mystical....how do you leap from seeing lights to someone helping you? It does tell you what kind of person you are....someone who needs someone else to mind them and validate them.
