I would say the worst thing is to continually inflate the already broke economy by huge spending (especially when that spending really amounts to give-aways to corrupt financiers.

I agree that it's not unique to America.
I think it's an innate problem in the human spirit...greed.
In any population the greedy will rise to the top economically, after all that's what they want to do and the non-greedy are far less motivated in that direction.
And since money is power, the greedy almost always run things.
