langleygirl: Think he's just answering the op's question. Personally there are a few breeds that I like. Labs are great family dogs in my experience. Right now I've got a Chihuahua ... she's a cutie but sometimes too yappy.
Yep I know that..I merely wondered why he said pitbull..too many folk equate a pitbull with a macho image, bring them up all wrong, and bought up with love and affection, they are not the dogs the press love to slate! The bull terriers are actually such a loving affectionate natured breed, but unfortunately so many people dont know this, they merely see them as fighting breeds.... and it breaks my heart when people use their strength against them.
solsticemoon: too many people fail to realise, its not the breed, its the owner! Ive had golden retrievrs, great dogs but capable of nastiness to protect the family, a rottie, such a big softie at home.........and now Ive a pitbull cross and a doberman cross, both rescue dogs that no one wanted as they thought they'd be too aggressive. Like hell, softest beggars ever..its how you bring them up..and having a little sense!, who'd leave any dog with a baby thats dressed in soft furry clothes n smells like milk??
hello solsticemoon,
i agree with you completely...i like dogs not breeds..
and i have answered "dashshund" as in our family it happened we had dashshunds..one lived 14 yrs, the second 16, the third 14, so it makes 44 yrs of interacting with dashshunds...

they were 3 splendid different personalities..
actually those liitle rotund darlings make excellent companions..and yes, way to much is put on breeds..dogs do take on what their owners teach them..Ive had dogs for 30 years, normally two at a time, so many great friends and always remembered for their individual personalities. Ive told my kids, when I go, I want to be buried with all my dogs..got them all in boxes..well mebbe not the ones that are still alive..thats a bit too cruel

lol...
you made me recall about the use in some tribù (before the christianity) that when a leader died his wife/wifes were destinated to be burried with him...oh, well...the wife's life is kinda scary, anyway...
Chocobloc: Dogs are loyal, warm and loving; Dogs make great companions for humans. They keep the house alive and make you laugh; They will listen to you all day long; They are the best confidante you will ever have.

I'm rather partial towards the German Shepherd.
We used to have one when I was a kid. That dog couldn't be kept tied up as it would break the heaviest dog chain you could buy and he would slip out of halters as well. You could put a blanket down on the floor with a newborn baby on it and he would lay down next to it.
We also had a Siamese cat at the same time. Whenever she went outside, he would "babysit" her kittens allowing them to crawl all over him, play with his tail or ears
It was rough when he had to be put down due to his age and heartworm. He was family

mine was the same
once my sis came for visit with her "still" baby twins my dog was lying in the door, chewing a big calf bone he didn't know the kids that time yet, they were crawling around and wanted to leave the room and just crawled over him for to get their goal my dog didn't care, was just looking what's going on, some sniffing, wobbled with his tail and continued chewing his bone
the same time I had two Persian cats when I fed him, they came for checking out his meal
he stopped to eat and let them try if his were better than theirs

Had a Golden Retriever while with my first wife. After our second son was born, she put him on the couch. I was in the easy chair reading while keeping an eye on him. The dog who was still a puppy walked up and sniffed my son out of curiosity. The wife was in the kitchen, saw this and thought the dog was trying to drag our son off the couch. I had stopped reading to watch the dog and all she did was sniff and turn away. Despite what I said to the wife, we had to give the dog away.

This is my best mate, she has a bull terrier as company, both are great with kids and people.

oh my, how silly
but my brother in law is the same idiot (though he's a nice guy) so afraid of dogs and put that into the heads of their kids as well (he wasn't there when my sis visited me) but now the twins are 16 years old and are afraid of dogs as well
of course you need to teach them, that not every dog is the same and that you may not touch everyone straight
my boss also has two Golden Retriever, those loveable dogs and now they also got a baby only recently
no one of them would even only think about to to give the dogs away
this tharead brought to my memory Clementine, our last dashshund, that we called in family The Baroness coz it was impossible to make her do something if she didn't want...
if it rained she wouldn't go outside...just made a pee outside near the door and then wanted to come back home...
let alone if there was snow...she was horrified at the thought of walking in the snow...such a plebeian thing...lol
if she didn't like the direction we were going during the walk she would sit down and nobody would be able to move her from there...
she died last year and was just a fantastic dashshund baroness..

you mean Dachshund? am I right?
but your description about just tells me, that I'm right
they are very common for their stubbornness
but actually they got bred for to hunt badgers "Dachse" from that their name Dachshund and their frame, by that, they could easily slip into a badger's set for drive them out
actually they belong to the family of hunting dogs

hello inkognito,
yes...i mean daschhund...
ohh...our baroness was a hunter as well...
she even managed to kill the guinea-pig of my friend...that my friend put in the grass to have it have a walk, but it turned out to be its last walk..
they are particulary destinated for the foxes hunting as they can enter inside the fox'es "cave" and won't quit the fight, anyway...

clementine was obviously a long haired red dachshund...lol
leostartingover: None of the above although I love all dogs. My favourite is a miniature sausage dog (daschund)!!!
You have good taste Leo. Mine too. Use to have one named Rocky. He was a dapple. I named him Rocky because when he was a puppy in order to amuse himself he would go out to the back yard and find a golf ball sized rock and play with it for hours. Hence......Rocky. Sure miss the little guy too.
