I'm a new member who has been bamboozled by the amount of mail I get from countries all over the world - mainly scammers, I suspect.
I was just interested to know if this was a pattern.

Every person here at CS experiences mail from these rip off merchants. No doubt they trawl through all the new members to try and catch them, plus numerous other profiles.
Block, delete and report them, if you feel they are trying to prise anything of monetary value from you.

I agree with you, those who don't want to respond simply shouldn't.
The majority of my mail is from scammers.
