I like the natural chunk charcoal for flavor when I can find it. I do have to admit that the gas grills are handy when you are in a hurry to get the food cooked.

Gas, generally, because its just cleaner and there is no scraping out the grill after.
But the charcoal is good for the taste! I saw something on TV the other day that looked interesting; some charcoal plate thingies that go on top of the gas grill and still gives the food that smokey taste.

Agreed 100%. Add in a little wood for additional flavoring and that makes for perfection when grilling.

I'll take gas any day over charcoal. You can flavor food in any number ways. Charcoal dirties the environment in many ways: fugitive particulates in the air and slime on your clothes and shoes.

We tried smoking some meat when I was a kid but could not regulate the heat properly. A neighbor was going to teach my Dad to cob smoke ham but died before he got around to it.

I prefer charcoal in my little Weber, but I also have a gas grill for those days when time is an issue. Most importantly is the smoke in my opinion. I like to soak a little mesquite in water then throw it in to create a smell and flavor to die for !!

no more pollution please. no more smoke. you're going to expedite global warming with that stuff. no more camp fires or open burning of any type either within 100 meters of where we live, unless it's filtered it out with activated charcoal.

I'm more than sure that grilling & campfires are the least of the problem when it comes to air pollution...
I put charcoal. I myself take no credir in cooking on outside grill. My ex and other I have been outside with when cooking. Have also been to a few get togethers where they use propane on the fancier grill. I prefer taste with charcoal better. Also if I do ever do the outdoor cooking, I would use Habatchi or $9 dollar grill. Like camping where you cook over a fire make coffee same in am. Rather than rv or trailer. If I camp in years past enjoyed the idea of outside, sort of ruffing it, but have to have a shower every 2 days, and in middle of night if no bathrooms then I must be accompannied to a discreet area with whoever from tent and flashlight. My only 2 stipulations.

That's true Green because we're talking about particulate matter of 2.5 micrograms per cubic meter which is very harmful to our upper respiratory systems. Dose exposure and duration all adds up dude.

The reason I say this is, why not complain about the 1500+ coal burning power stations? Surely they are doing much more damage equivalent to an hour of "your Vesuvius".
Personally I just think you don't like the smoke in your backyard, which is a valid point, however to be disingenuous and go on about "air pollution" is ridiculous.

How, pray tell does anyone filter an open fire with activated charcoal or anything else?
Global warming is junk science using "data" like the ocean being universally five feet deep and perfectly still throughout all of the world's oceans.
There are more than enough REAL problems facing humanity without wasting time on fantasy. Then again fantasies like global warming provide a useful distraction to keep people from seeing the real problems and who might be benefiting from them.

Dude, I'm jest trying to pull your chain a little. I worked for the EPA for 33-yrs in air pollution control and one of the reasons I retired 4-years ago is because my passion for real ambient environmental science and belief in USEPA's mission and goals expired when it got away from protecting health and the environment to focus on false science like global warming.

Her Kattness was hoping you were "just blowing smoke". She and her father get very agitated around people that believe in it. Get the two of them working together on one of them and it is like watching wolves circling in for the kill.

She says, "tip of the hat for a gag well played".
OMG that is too funny. We actually used to hold annual Visible Emission schools to train and certify people in CFR Method-9 to read stack emission opacity in the field. We would use a transmissometer to detect levels of incompletely combusted fuels to create light and dark smoke; using toluene and benzene (later determine to be carcinogenic)

that 'Activated Charcoal' reference really put the Clincher to it!
