You are entitled to your own opinion as I am entitled to mine.

However, I am certain that eventually there will be acceptance, and not dominance worldwide.

Only time will tell!

RE: He jumped into my life beyond my expected

Hi Phoenix

How are you? How is your Dad?
Hope things are going well with both of you.

I am glad to see you have a companion.
From your photos, it looks like a wonderful little animal.
He seems to adore you.
The poor thing must have had a difficult time before you rescued him.
You are a kind-hearted person.

Best Regards!

Concerning the matter of Religion being a demon and its relationship to Science that you raised, I would prefer to discuss this with you in a CS email since it is not directly related to the topic of this blog, in keeping with Blog Rule 4.

Please send me an email outlining your views on the matter.

I am always open to constructive discussion on an issue.

I empathize with you in regard to the difficulties you faced as a citizen of Northern Ireland that you mentioned.

I have a great respect for the Irish. I think some of the best poets on Poetry Corner, where I post some of my poems, are Irish.

I agree that there is evidence to show that SOME MUSLIMS have engaged in “cutting off heads & blowing people up” as you have stated. However, they are a minority.

ALL MUSLIMS do not engage in or support such actions and it is very unfair to associate such actions with ALL muslims, and to stereotype them.

I agree with your comment.
This blog points to such a process of integration in the United States.

Perhaps religion may be a demon to you, but one cannot deny that it provides valuable “psychological security” that helps others to cope with their daily lives.

Thank you for your open-minded view of the situation.

Thanks for your comment.
According to the article, it may take a generation or two for the Muslim impact on American cultural life to be manifested.

Hello Johnny

Thanks for your very open-minded and balanced comment, especially for your words of wisdom:

"As humans, no matter what your religion is, we all share this tiny planet and it is imperative we preserve humanity and the environment as a whole. If not, chaos will surely ensue."

Hello to you!

Why do women live longer than men?

DC

I agree with your comment. Whereas women tend to discuss and share their problems with girlfriends, etc., as you have stated, men tend to keep things bottled up inside, and that may be detrimental to their health.

Why do women live longer than men?

ObstinanceWorks

Does your comment “Live slow, die old” suggest that women live slow in comparison to men since they generally live longer than men?

Why do women live longer than men?

ShakenHeart

If I understand you correctly, in saying “till death do us part” during the wedding vows, women set a goal to delay the parting for quite a long time.
Do men set similar goals?

Why do women live longer than men?

Redex

If you do a google search, you will see that it is a generally accepted fact that women live longer than men.

Why do women live longer than men?

Snookum

I support the view you expressed that, on the whole, women have better coping skills than men.

What is Thought?

ShakenHeart

Thanks for your last response.

Even though I quoted Descartes's famous statement:

"Cogito, Ergo Sum"
"I think, therefore I am",

I personally do not agree with it 100%.

"Am" is the present tense of the verb "to be".
Thus, the statement is a confirmation of his "being" based on his ability to think.
However, what about animals? Do they think?
Certainly, they "are", in the sense of confirmation of their being.

Or what about inanimate objects, like a stone?
If you stub your toe on it, that would confirm its being.
Yet, can a stone think?

This raises the larger question:
Is thinking a requirement of being?

Exactly what is thinking or "thought"?

“What is possible is always changing, thus 'our' reality is always changing but reality can't change?”

What is wrong with reality always changing?
Change is a feature of reality.

I think you are confusing reality and change.

“but "0" is not a number,”

Isn't it?

“8/4=2/1 then cross multiply and divide to make sure they are "=" 8=8 This just shows it is a balanced equation.”

I did not make a mistake (I made no reference to a balanced equation.)

I'm glad you found the blog intriguing.
Thank you very much for your input and participation.

Thanks for your input.

“dreams I reckon are a distortion all be it slight of thoughts. They could be thoughts when reading a book not necessary a real life happening. So sometimes dreamland can be more exciting than real life.”

I am not sure if dreams are a distortion of thoughts.

The content of dreams has always been fascinating to human beings, starting from our early ancestors. As Johnny mentioned, no doubt it is tied in with our personal life experiences. Some see it as messages from another dimension or world. The religious-minded view some dreams as messages from God.

Your statement that

“when asleep the computer(brain) does a defrag sorts all things out into correct boxes for us to unpack if needed”

supports the commonly held view that during sleep, the brain is engaged in sorting out things in a person's mind.

Thanks for your input.

“Consciousness is the awareness that you exist.
Thought is the process with which you assimilate stimulation and everything around you.”

If I understand you correctly,
thought is a process directed at everything around yourself
whereas
consciousness is directed towards yourself, more specifically, your existence.

If I do understand you correctly ,this raises the question:
Can a person think of his/her existence?
In other words, can one be aware of one's existence through thought?

Remember Descartes famous statement:
“Cogito Ergo Sum”
“I think therefore I am”

Welcome to the blog, my poetry friend.

“What is mind?”
“What is matter?”

You have asked two important questions.

Dealing with the second one first, I think you will find the answer in a basic Chemistry course, which you have probably done.

The first one is much more complex.
Different persons may have different views on the answer.
Since our friend, Obstinance_Works, introduced the term into the discussion, I wish to invite him to give his answer.

What is Thought?

Obstinance_Works

Thanks for your input.

“Thought is self-aware and conscious.
Mind is instinctive and subconscious.”

Based on the distinction you have made above,
how would you classify “dreaming activity”?

Does the answer lie in your second comment:

“Mind and thought inform one another using the methods of thought and mind. Meaning that you may or may not consciously realise when this happens.” ?

Your statement:

“Thought and mind, the conscious and the subconscious, are together dwarfed by the majesty of all creation. The things we know and the things we dream are less than what is.”

reminds me of a statement by Albert Einstein:

“To know that which is impenetrable to us really exists,
manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty.”

What is Thought?

Hello Itchy
Welcome!

You asked whether or not thought and consciousness are the same thing.
As you can see from the comments so far, it is questionable whether they are.

What are your views on the matter?

“44, I disagree that it is the limitations of math.”

You disagree with my reference to the limitations of mathematics, yet in your previous comment you stated:

“Math makes reality not real.”

Isn't that a glaring contradiction? How can reality not be real?

You also stated:

“In my world the numbers don't lie. I trust the numbers over my senses”

Consider any two numbers, “a” and “b”.
Say “a” = 8, and “b” = 4
Dividing “a” by “b”, we get 8/4 = 2
Cross multiplying, we get
4 x 2 = 8 which is correct

Now, let us divide two different numbers by the number “0”.

According to mathematics, dividing a number by 0 gives the answer “infinity”
e.g, 3/0 = “infinity”(normally represented by the number 8 rotated through 90 degrees)

Choosing “1” and “2” as the two numbers,
we get
1/0 = infinity, 2/0 = infinity

Thus, when we divide both numbers by the same number, that is, “0”, we obtain the same answer.

Does that mean that the two different numbers, “1” and “2” are equal?
In other words, is “1” = “2”?

“Thought is something we do consciously when awake.”

I assume this may be termed “conscious thought”.

What about the activity of “dreaming”?
Most people are able to recall, at least some of their dreams in their thoughts when they awake.
Can dreaming be considered “unconscious thought” activity?
What happens during “dreaming”?

“Consciousness is Awareness, also when we are awake but it is a state of mind.”

Isn't thinking activity or thought associated with a state of mind also?

What is Thought?

Redex

I like your unique view of meditation:

“Meditation is deep deep awareness of shutting out everything until you are not aware of thought or consciousness, a blending I call it with the universe. very very hard to do but extreme peace will follow. Its healing without meds “

With regard to your statement:

“thought is what I do with information received when awake I think.”

Is thought an activity associated with the waking state only?
What about when we are sleeping and dreaming?
Can dreaming be considered a type of “thought activity also”?

What is Thought?

Snookum

With regard to your statement:

“Prove to me that meditation works? It is all in the mind.”

I believe that Flyjames, Redex and Minerva can testify that it works and I am certain that others here who will do the same.

Clearly, you must have some definite expectation as proof.

What are you looking for as proof that meditation works?

What is Thought?

Snookum

“Meditation does not work for me! How can others say it works?”

I am certain that there are others here who practice “meditation” and can testify it works for them.

Perhaps, the secret to successful meditation lies in what Flyjames said:

“In meditation I dont hold on to thoughts that flows in and out of consciousness then I am an observer og thoughts.”

What is Thought?

FlyJames

Thanks for your input.

You make some interesting observations about thought:

“Thought is happening all the time even when we are asleep.”

In your daily activity,
you “try hold on to the frist thought that comes in my head at the start of the day and make it positive”
but
“In meditation I dont hold on to thoughts that flows in and out of consciousness then I am an observer og thoughts.”

I think you have made a useful distinction with regard to thought in your ordinary daily activities versus in meditation:
In meditation, you do not try to control thought but allow it to flow freely.
