Molly, every now and then CS does come up trumps applause

RE: Flip-Flops...

Promise to let us know if the barefoot-on-the-golf-course has an effect on the pump higher up, 'kay? grin

Hs, wow, thanks for a really detailed answer! I'd never heard of Ccleaner, just looked it up and there's a comment about being careful of the built-in registry cleaner unless you know what you're doing? (I don't ...) but I am definitely going to check it out in detail, it looks awesome.

I'll also check out the indexing, I think I remember seeing that as a box when I was in msconfig to switch in and out of safe mode

Anti-virus, check, only one.

Thanks!

Thanks all - I've learned more today than in a long while, my brain hurts.

Nice, cheers! for a moment I thought by driver issue you meant me as the driver doh

It has been slow for a while after startup for at least a year - I just drank coffee and waited. The problem was suddenly so bad on Saturday morning I had to hastily switch to the laptop to work. There's a helpdesk add-on for my work which I switched off on the PC when I'd finished and suddenly everything was back to normal, ok yay, I can manage without it. However the problem came back in the evening and came back tonight when I switched across. I've done a bit of (superslow, sigh) tweaking removing several startup add-ons this evening, and so far so good since I booted up again.

If the problem is back tomorrow, system restore it is. Thanks!

RE: Flip-Flops...

The foot is the second most efficient pump in the body and there's a theory that if we all walked barefoot in grass for at least an hour a day, death from heart disease (the single biggest killer in the world, wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead of the virus) would drop dramatically. Shoe companies suppress the theory indignantly.

There's little grass worth the name in Spain and it's nearly always privately owned sigh

Jig, I borrowed my daughter's iPad the last time I visited and found it frustrating at first but yup, it rapidly became intuitive.

Right now money's the issue so any changes will be directly cost-related and if I can avoid making them, whoop whoop. I will have to be in normal mode for work tomorrow but will bypass the 8 pm slowdown by switching to safe afterwards. Who needs to watch videos anyway. I will write poetry idea

RE: the LIBERATE campaign

Ï know, the mask thing is a back-and-forth issue. Wearing it means you're infected vs wearing it means you don't want to be.

Spain's talking of easing lockdown soon but masks will be required. As we can't get masks at the moment, they're promising masks will be supplied. Right now some people don't bother but the majority make their own cloth ones and wash them because we're slowly coming round to thinking of them as something that says 'I don't want to cough or sneeze on you'.

Z my computer far from being horse-drawn is pedal-driven snooty this is both ecologically sound and the reason I have such spectacularly shapely legs so there. Huh.

Cheers Merc! applause

Merc, I tend to reduce to just one or max two tabs as soon as it happens and it makes no difference. Not enough RAM, fragmentation, slow access, those would all be problems all the time, not just for 2 hours out of the average 16 that I am using my computer. (I work online, not just permanent surfing laugh)

confused

RE: Lets face it

I can absolutely guarantee you the thought never crossed my mind. snooty

What I am noticing though as lockdown slowly happens across the CS world, bloggers are becoming more 'themselves'. Those who blog a lot have stepped up the blogging rate, even if they're repeating themselves. Those who are bull-headed are becoming solid bull from horn to hoof. The pompous are pontificating at an increased rate, half the time when I write a comment I have to delete half or more before I submit doh I never even knew I WAS pompous wow And the lascivious are really oiling themselves up rolling on the floor laughing

I think lascivious could be a way to go, now if I can just remember back as far as before I was cut off from all human contact ... sigh

trp (me again) I do have W10 on the laptop and probably because I don't use it all the time and I am so used to W7, I don't find it intuitive, I struggle to do anything whereas oddly enough I took to W7 like a duck to water.

I've done quite a few checks of files / drivers without finding a missing or corrupted one? perhaps the software for finding them has also corrupted. From what you're saying, am I right, could I find programs being called up (unasked) at regular times and block those? And I completely understand that explaining how to do that to a technological idiot remotely could be impossible. sigh

Safe mode

Merc, my local buddy is an expert too but he's not allowed to come here and tweak the stupid thing's settings sigh I wish you could come by but you'd need to expect a half-hour high-speed blether first rolling on the floor laughing

Pat, my main problem is that I am so doff that I could look at the list until I was blue in the face and couldn't recognize the problems.

Pat, off the internet the PC is 100% so I don't think the problem is the hardware. And most of the time it isn't the software either, we got fibre optic cabling not that long ago here and usually it is super-responsive and very effective. I did wonder if 8 pm locally is a high-demand time but since we're in lockdown most people are on the internet most of the time, nothing else to do.

Big brother to the rescue, the ad popping up (for me, anyway) between comments is a 3 step guide to repairing your PC uh oh

Safe mode

Merc, cheers. Did your tech guy tell you why W7 was picking certain times?

I've heard talk of superusers surfing other people's signals and dismissed it as crazy talk (plus didn't understand it) but now it is really grating my carrot. I've gone into Chrome's own task manager during the delayed times and can't see anything running that shouldn't be so it is definitely hidden stuff.

confused

Safe mode

Thanks Trp, I do have a laptop with W10 and hate it with a passion so I've resisted going to W10 on the desktop, but I know the option of keeping W7 is fading fast.

You seem very clued up, any input on why it only happens twice a day and the computer is 100% okay the rest of the time?

Safe mode

Thanks Pat, the thing I find bizarre is that it is only occasional but I will cautiously try that. I'm an absolute idiot about things technological moping so may disappear forever

RE: Covidiot

I think rallies should be allowed and as many people as possible encouraged to go to them, it would be a very powerful way to overturn the term Covidiot.

RE: Thomas Friedman essay

Originally lockdown was to avoid surges, flatten the curve, despite repeated pandemic warnings we were unprepared, it was a chance to let medical supplies and PPE and facilities catch up. It does worry me now that the trend is turning towards extended lockdowns, indefinite social distancing, and all the terrifyingly frequent comments about 'rest of the year' and '2021' even '2022' which we are hearing in Europe.

I'm no keener to get infected than anyone else and was quietly social-distancing before we went into strict lockdown - even then I didn't believe the 2 weeks we were sold. In plagues of old whole cities locked down for 40 days. Well, ours has been extended and extended and will probably extend again to mid May which will be 60 days and our situation is that the original hot spots are still hot spots and other parts of this large country are still not hot spots. Keep the hotspot airports closed, cautiously start opening up the unaffected areas?

Oh by the way I'm not in the US. We have the virus in Spain too. Along with 183 other countries, all trying to keep people both safe and from financial ruin. Balancing act of note to get right, I wonder if any country will crack the formula?

RE: The Isolation Blog

Kiffness - Sounds Of Sirens laugh ideal for an Isolation blog grin

RE: The Isolation Blog

Interesting link Z especially as it says nothing about how they coped with the financial fallout. Mind you I suppose WW1 had left that a bit topsy turvy anyway.

In 2018 it was generally agreed Spanish 'flu 100 years earlier had killed 18 million. This article reckons up to 100 million. wow

This is why I keep a spreadsheet of this bloody virus, so I know what figures were released on a daily basis and don't have to rely on the media. grin

RE: Bored?

Tell you what I shop during siesta since everyone knows the virus takes a siesta too, phew. As a result I have only been stopped twice in a month, not too bad. However, all it needs is one alert copper to notice a certain RHD drive (kind of easy to spot in a LHD country) has appeared more than once in a week and I spend a month's income on a fine, sooooo not risking that uh oh

I always seem to get the watermelons where you spend as much time spitting as eating sigh still worth it

RE: Bored?

(and when did watermelons become seedless??? confused )

RE: Bored?

You tell me this AFTER my weekly shopping trip???? wow

RE: Chaos in Michigan as drivers swarm Michigan capital to protest Gov. Nit- Whitmer's stay home order

Should be okay, not as if the virus is spreading in the US in any way, you have it completely confined.

Those inhuman measures are around the same as Spain has endured for the last month and frankly we shouldn't have bothered, we went from 2 thousand cases at the start of lockdown to, hmm, let me see, oh okay 178 thousand cases today, obviously it doesn't work anyway.

The US had 1 thousand cases on the same day we started lockdown. Any of the thousand left or is it all sorted and back to business as usual?

The only concern you might have is that if it ever does get a grip there won't be enough conservative voters left to stop a democratic victory in the election. That would be a little ironic. Maybe it is a democratic plot uh oh

RE: There is always a bright side.

My Facebook 'friends' are a completely mixed bag from family / friends living all round the world to ex-colleagues to people I've 'met' via groups and befriended online but not in real life. If FB ever takes away the option of restricting who can view what you post, I will probably stop using it. Most of the time what I put on there is private for FB contacts, but every now and then I like that I can post a family photo, for instance, to 'close family' and know that no-one else can see it.

Right now it is a mix of doom & gloom from one lot, and determined cheer from the rest. Some hilarious jokes, too. I'm glad to have it even though I don't care much for what I know of the owner laugh but then for all I know I wouldn't much like the CEO of my telephone service, I'm still going to use my phone.

Take care Fay bouquet

BCG (the TB inoculation) could be an answer

Cheers Red good news on the Kindle there's a book on promo at the moment, I've sent you a preview link.

Glad you have family so close even if you can't visit with them at the moment. My daughter has got me onto Zoom and we've had a couple of long chats on that, she plays quizzes with friends in group chats and reckons it is nearly as good as being there, PLUS no drive home afterwards conversing

Yeah the hope with the TB vaccination is that while it may not stop you getting it, it has in the past really reduced the effects of lung infections and as the countries with TB (and therefore with many inoculated against it) really do seem to be coping better with the virus, it sounds hopeful. Lots of pharmaceutical companies rushing to offer their lucrative cancer treatments etc as cures but for me not getting it at all would definitely be preferable. yay

You stay safe too. I'm off to the farmacia to queue for masks, apparently stocks are to be delivered everywhere by latest end of week. I'll be wearing one of the makeshift ones I have on in my profile pic for the queue uh oh

grin (hmm, take out the teeth lines in this emoji and it looks like a mask!)

BCG (the TB inoculation) could be an answer

LCBR hey get in ahead of the rush, book your shot now, at worst you won't get TB for 15 years rolling on the floor laughing
