In the 1980's a new genre of science fiction came out called CYBERPUNK, (Neuromancer, Count Zero, Voice of the Whirlwind), and later, they started making movies based on that genre, (Johnny Mnemonic, Matrix). So if you'd read of the powers-that-be in those books and film, the Metaverse seems like they are actually trying to turn those dystopian stories into real life.
