Abra, I think it takes knowing a man to see that he is egotistical and always puts himself first.
A healthy self image is good; selfishless is not good.
Sometimes, love does not continue and the man wanders off on his own path. Or, the woman finds out that that important in his life and she wanders off.
The Green Mountain Club which maintains the Long Trail has a website with contact information.
They might be able to tell you about the best places to park if you called them. I think that they may run a shuttle service too, picking up hikers at trail ends to bring them back to cars or their accomodations.
