Probably the toughest time in anyone's life is when you have to murder a loved one because they're possessed by the devil. Other than that, though, it's been a good day.
I didn't think I was cool in school. Occasionally I will run into people that will talk about how popular I was. It's really weird to me, because I don't remember it like that. I remember being really insecure, and wished I was popular.
One girl came up to me in a bar several years ago. She wanted to tell me what a big crush she had on me in school. She used to sneak by my Algebra class just to peek through the door and get a look at me. She took me to her house that night and treated me very nicely. So popularity paid off in the long run.
Choice has been proven to be a crucial element of survial for victims of catastrophes. Loss of freedom, whether by environmental forces, or by limitations of the body in sickness, can be a source of depression or the loss of will to survive.
Persons that have survived these types of situations tell us that by limiting their awareness to just a few areas of attention, they can gain a sense of freedom. Deciding how to tie your shoes can be a simple palce to start. If there are no shoes, then there might be toes to count, or name, or dedicate the day to. Nothing matters except to find some place, even if it's only in the imagination, to play the game of awareness. You make the choices in that game, and you make the choices to remain in charge of the game. As long as there is a choice, there is life.
University of Wisconsin psychologist, Richard Logan, has studied the survivors of ordeals like imprisonment, or being lost on a long voyage. He found that the person's attitude, above anything else, affected how the predicaments affected them. Some of those survivors reported a transcendence. They sort of merged with their environment while performing their activities, or even during moments of great suffering. By almost any "normal" standard the environments would be considered quite unsatisfactory. But when the transcendence occurred, any distastfulness would disappear.
A judgmental attitude traps the person in a prison of helplessness. When the awareness is focused on how things are not okay, and how much everything sucks we are stuck. Suspending this judgment allows us to become centered in the moment, and is rewarded with peace, harmony, and flow. A judgmental attitude cuts us off from the flow of life, acceptance carries us to the next unfolding moment, and the possiblity of change.
We are all caught up in the middle of one gigantic circumstance. We always have control in our circumstance, whether we choose to exercise it or not, it is still there.

You'll snort K and I'll snort K, honeeey. You'll snort K and I'll snort K, babe. You'll snort K and I'll snort K, we'll fight an' screw all night and day. Honey, babe, be mine.
