People had no idea of the geographic boundaries of their country, of the different people that inhabit it, different customs, etc. The only unifying concept they knew, and of material importance to them, was the name of their King (Queen). Even for people who had a more developed sense of nationhood in the past (like the Greeks of ancient times etc.) such national identity was mostly lost after centuries of emigrations, invasions and interbreeding.
I think it's one of the best threads you've ever posted.
Why the Queen and not the King? Well, she is the monarch of the British monarchy. Why not someone else, the people, the nation etc? I believe that's a remnant of times past, when the identity of a kingdom's subjects could not be defined in terms of a common religion, ethnicity or language, but only in terms of allegiance to the King.
In case the subject is of any importance to you personally, I'll offer my unsolicited opinion: you look like a super cool great funny smart dude, who's nevertheless cautious about dating
The decline in the US bee population, first observed in 2006, is continuing, a phenomenon that still baffles researchers and beekeepers. Data from the US Department of Agriculture show a 29 percent drop in beehives in 2009, following a 36 percent decline in 2008 and a 32 percent fall in 2007.
This affects not only honey production but around 15 billion dollars worth of crops that depend on bees for pollination.
Scientists call the phenomenon "colony collapse disorder" that has led to the disappearance of millions of adult bees and beehives and occurred elsewhere in the world including in Europe.
It's interesting though that we think the beating of adults (women) as reprehensible, but we don't protest as much about the widespread daily beatings of children
Iceland's economy is growing, with an unemployment rate half that of Ireland.
As for Greece, the euro itself has harmed its tourism industry more than anything else. Despite being as profligate when in drachma, it could always borrow from the markets and finance its budget deficits.
However one likes the idea of European integration and peace, giving away sovereignty to become a pariah member of the union ain't an appealing thing.
I see what you are saying about the horrendous pain after exiting EU, but I don't agree. First, we have the example of Iceland. Then we have Greece, for which the European Advisory Council had proposed on Tuesday a radical cure: to exit from the euro-zone and reintroduce the drachma. Compare this with: German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said a Greek exit from the euro “is not taboo, but I think it’s wrong,” according to a Focus magazine interview. Greece’s return to the drachma would be “catastrophic” for the German economy because it would trigger an appreciation of the euro, damping German exports, Schaeuble told the magazine.
I too think this discussion is for another thread. Anyway, the picture with developed vs. developing world is much more nuanced. Colonialism and exploitation are part of the picture. Demographics and local culture and traditions as well. It's a huge topic that doesn't have a B&W answer. JMO
Haven't read all posts, but wanted to mention Greece's efforts to evacuate people from Libya
Two more Greek ferries docked at Irakleio port on the island of Crete on Sunday morning carrying more than 4,200 third-country evacuees from Libya, the majority of them Chinese nationals.
The first ship, the Hellenic Spirit, arrived in Iraklion port just before 9:00 a.m., carrying some 2,120 evacuees, while the second vessel, the Olympic Champion, arrived in port two hours later with another 2,130 evacuees on board. The foreign nationals were put up in local hotels until arrangements are made for their return to their home countries.
A Greek ferry boat arrived at the port of Irakleio on Crete on Saturday morning with another 2,800 third country nationals evacuated from strife-torn Libya. Most of the foreign nationals were identified as Chinese citizens. Several thousand Chinese nationals have already been ferried from Libya to Crete, where they are being hosted until their repatriation. Meanwhile, the first flights to China carrying a total of 541 evacuees from Libya departed from Hania airport on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Chinese ambassador to Greece, the massive repatriation effort to transport Chinese evacuees from Libya via Greece will take an estimated 10 days. Approximately 13,000-15,000 Chinese nationals working in Libya will be evacuated by Greek vessels to Crete, where they will be put up in hotels before boarding charter flights back home, following a request by the Chinese government to Greece.
