Catalan Republic (2017) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article is about the Catalan state proclaimed in 2017. For other uses, see Catalan Republic.
The Catalan Republic (Catalan: República Catalana) is a unilaterally declared state in the Iberian peninsula. The Parliament of Catalonia declared independence from Spain during the constitutional crisis that followed the 2017 Catalan independence referendum.
As the Catalan parliament declared independence from Spain, the Spanish Senate triggered Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978, which would allow the Spanish government to impose direct rule over Catalonia. Shortly thereafter Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy dissolved the Parliament of Catalonia, dismissed the Executive Council of Catalonia and called a snap regional election for 21 December 2017. As of 27 October 2017, the Catalan Republic is unrecognized by the international community, which regards the region as part of the Kingdom of Spain.
History Main article: 2017 Spanish constitutional crisis On 26–27 October 2017, a debate over a possible declaration of independence was held in the Parliament of Catalonia, simultaneous to the Spanish Senate debating the enforcement of direct rule in Catalonia. At the end of the debate, the Catalan parliament voted a unilateral declaration of independence which was backed 70–10, two MPs casting a blank ballot and all MPs from Citizens, the Socialists' Party of Catalonia and the People's Party boycotting the vote. In response, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy dissolved the Parliament of Catalonia, dismissed the Executive Council of Catalonia and called a snap regional election for 21 December 2017, after obtaining the Spanish Senate endorsement to the enforcement of Article 155.
The General Council of the Val d'Aran in northwestern Catalonia announced it would hold an extraordinary meeting on 30 October to evaluate the consequences of the independence declaration.
Foreign relations International recognition
At the time of its proclamation, the Catalan Republic had no recognition from any sovereign nation. Currently, Andorra, Argentina, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Norway, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States have openly refused to recognise the Catalan Republic as a legitimate entity and supported Spain's territorial integrity.
The Flemish Minister-President, Geert Bourgeois, expressed support for the Catalan Republic, but acknowledged the decision is up to the Belgian federal government. The President of the Corsican Assembly, Jean-Guy Talamoni, expressed its support for the Catalan independence, but the recognition is purely symbolic. The Scottish Government expressed its support for the self-determination of the Catalan people, stating that they "understand and respect the position of the Catalan Government".
They represent a 48% of the catalan Parliament. It's a coalition of separatist parties called Junts pel Si (Together for Yes), with the support of a radical left-wing party, the CUP, won 48% of the vote in 2015 elections.
But it's a hellish situation. The same day the catalan Parliament vote for independence, the spanish senate aproves "special measures" for Catalonia, including ceases of catalan authorities and dissolution of the parliament.
Now one administration and another are almost ennemies, including the policemen.
Here the independentists feel dissapointed because the catalan president made a declaration of independence but suspended its approval by the parlament.
In the other side, the Government has already transferred a request to the President of the Generalitat. It requires him to clarify whether he has proclaimed independence or not.
Rajoy said at the Congress of Deputies that Puigdemont has until Monday at 10:00 am to respond. If he does not or confirms that he has declared the Catalan republic, he would have a second term to rectify, until Thursday.
Catalonia has its best market in Spain. It's Spain who feeds Catalonia, and the main corporations are leaving Catalonia to have their headquarters out, in Spanish territory.
