From the start it sounds like you'll need to initiate and direct the course of the conversation, and likely that of the relationship should one happen at all.
It's a tough one, because I do have much respect for the sacrifice they make, but in all honesty the thought is unpleasant to know that that the hands of your loved one are tainted by blood.
