Man Found Dead In Brazil After Meeting Woman Online
POSTED: 10:58 pm EDT October 14, 2006 UPDATED: 9:34 am EDT October 15, 2006
CLEVELAND -- An internet love affair went wrong and now a local family is fighting for justice, NewsChannel5 reported.
The victim's sister has a warning for anyone who may try to meet others through Internet dating sites.
Marcia Sanchez Loebick remembers the good times with her brother, Raymond Merrill -- the times before he was killed.
"The letters she wrote him were so poetic and loving. This woman is a brilliant con artist," Loebick said.
Police and Loebick said Regina Rachid is Merrill's killer, NewsChannel5 reported.
Merrill met Rachid over the Internet last fall on a dating Web site.He went to visit her several times in Brazil, where she lived.
"He just felt they had this immediate rapport," Loebick said.
But the more she learned about Rachid, the more she worried.
"She was getting very impatient for him to come down there, and she just spewed venom. I couldn't believe the hatred and venom in her voice," Loebick said. "I said, 'Ray, that's a red flag,'" Loebick said.
It was during his last visit to Brazil that Loebick lost contact with her brother and she called police.
After a huge investigation, police discovered Merrill's bank accounts were drained and money was transfered into Rachid's account. Officials said the case cracked wide open in September.
"She was not out there looking for a man to date. In fact, one of the accomplices is her boyfriend. She already had a boyfriend. These were two professional criminals that just said this is how we're going to make money," Loebeck said. "They strangeled him with a copper wire. It's horrible. It's invading my thoughts."
She said all she can do now to honor her brother is to push for stronger safety on Internet dating sites.
Police won't say on which Web site the couple met. They said Merrill's body was found on Sept. 23 strangled and burned in a car in a remote location..

I very much agree with this and i suspect that some people actually look for long distance relationships because its so much easier to be a player then and use the distance as an excuse ....and then disappear before actually meeting up ......one has to be careful of course having said this there are many people who genuinely fall for each other and they live at a distance and who do succeed in making it work .....i think there are several examples on cs .............
further to this the supermarket would like to announce that This was later found to be misreporting spread by by an elderly gentleman unable to outrun the cops and intent on covering his tracks ....
ps the lingerie section has already been emptied due to the prompt action of a bald egg headed gentleman who was seen making his way there at dawn today......
this is a public access announcement ..due to the thousands of hours the sales staff have spent on connecting singles this supermarket is going into recievership customes are advised to take what they can ................
Well yes if distance can be worked out than i agree with you if one of you is prepared to fly over etc for visits.... and long term if one of you is prepared to relocate than that is fine ......
Yeah distance for me is an issue ...i am not looking to relocate ..so unless someone is interested in coming to live in a small island in the mediterranean there is no point...and to be honest i not interested in building up a relationship with someone for months and months before meeting...except of course as just friends thats ok .....but to chat and chat for months on end with someone across the world building up expectations is not for me..but hey others have done it and its worked for them.....
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS PROFILE http://www.connectingsingles.com/free-dating-jackiesjh.htm
Sitting on the fence huh ......now i am surprised i thought you were a strong believer in the power of ones convictions lol ....
