Defenestrate...I remember from my school days the phrase "the defenestration of Prague". Was that not an incudent that started some war? Some lad had the misfortune of being thrown out of a window and, not unnaturally, some others took offence. I should have looked it up before I posted.
Anyway, a word which does not exist but should.......I'll cheat here. Most of you will remember the sweets Spangles. they are no more and the name should die with the sweets. But in these here parts, we use Spangle as a term to describe an idiot...as in "he's a complete spangle"
He seems to want to get US troops of Iraq and Afghanistan as soon as possible. Apart from saving the lives of the poor guys that the half-wit who previously inhabited the White House has put at risk with his "invade 'em" policies, Obama will have more money that can be diverted to aid the USA's economy.
I listened to some kids talking on the bus last night....Facebook was their life. The whole conversation was the politics of "friends" and "not friends" on their flamin' Facebook page. There were so intense about it.
Anyone still remember getting a letter from someone you liked? Great to have a bit of paper that you could whip out and read again when you wanted to be cheered up.
Halcyon days!
Then again, it's nice to be able to converse so easily with someone from the other side of the world.
A French woman works beside me and I go weak at the knees when she speaks; she has retained a very strong French accent despite living in Scotland for many years. Ok, she is very attractive as well, so that does help!!
I think that Hamas is the body elected locally by the people of Gaza. You have to ask why people would vote for Hamas? Could it be that they see Hamas as the only people who might actually do something about their situation?
Gaza has a big virtual wall round it. Am I wrong?
As I said, people on here have their own deep-set views on some subjects and all the smart replies in the world don't hide that. Conrad, how would you like to be a Palestinian in Gaza? Try to answer objectively without trying to belittling me for my opinion or being smart.
All the smart and well-researched right-wing quotes, and the references to the undoubted excesses of Hamas, don't hide the fact that the Palestinians have been right and royally scr***d. The British started it off and the madmen (as opposed to the ordinary decent Jewish people who just want to get on with their lives) in Israeli have continued this. Israeli settlers continue to occupy more and more land, pushing more and more Palestinians out of the way. They don't ask, and they don't buy, they just do it by force of arms. This would bring world-wide condemnation if it happened anywhere else, but because it's in a country that the West just loves to bits, it's OK. I realise that will sound anti-Jewish to those of you with your own agenda, but I don't have a gripe against anyone. I just see blatant unfairness in what is happening.
Yip, Hamas are fighting a war and there is no doubt that they have much to answer for, but what would YOU do if a new state was forced upon you and gradually forced YOU out of the land that you and your people had lived on for centuries? Is it any wonder that many of the Palestinians are a tad unhappy about what is happening to them. Just ask the Native Americans how they feel about how they have been treated over the past 150 years. Colonialism (as practised by stacks of European counties, the US, former Soviet Bloc,Israel and all the rest of the expansionist countries and regimes) is always done for the benefit of the occupying force. Gaza, like other areas in the Middle East and elsewhere, is relatively powerless in this. It is now their place in life to be kicked around.
Aid goes to the Palestinians as the rest of the world tries to salve its conscience for the nightmare that it is putting the people of Gaza etc through.
I would love to see the day when all the warring factions in the Middle East could live in relative safety, but you just don't see that happening. It just gets worse every day.
Spot on! I was privileged to see Rory in Glasgow a few times and he lit the place up. For Hendrix to give him the accolade says so much...as Jimi could play a tune or two!!
Disappointing to read such generalisations. I went out with a Latvian girl for a while and don't recognise anything from what you're saying. It didn't work out, but I wouldn't consider the money I spent was wasted at all. I went in with my eyes wide open and spent what I wanted, not what she wanted.
Have you never been "scammed" by an English girl then? Did you not have a good time with the Eastern European girl?
If you are careful, no one will take advantage of you. Generally, throwing money at a woman won't make much of a difference if they are genuine.
Sometimes things work out, and sometimes they don't.
