RE: another mass shooting

And what's wrong with owning a full auto anything? quote]
Are you for real? What's wrong with it is that some idiot with a gripe against the world goes into a public place and starts spraying bullets at innocent people. Just what does any decent citizen need with an automatic gun anyway? For "home defence"? Just who do they expect to attack their home? The entire Sioux nation? Rommel and his Afrika Korps?

Guns kill people. A guy with a knife might kill a couple of people if he goes nuts. A guy with an automatic weapon will get that into double figures.

RE: USA Gets Prepared......,Just In Case....

Nothing like scaring the populace for politicians and the like to get their faces in the news.

Also, citizens are no doubt being told to watch out for coffins filled with earth, with the name "ALUCARD" on the lids being brought off ships in the dead of night.

Who were the last group to invade the States anyway? The Pilgrim Fathers?

RE: 911 terrorism....american government.?

I think that your criticism of the BBC is largely unfounded. It may not be as impartial as everyone would like (but still, I would argue, more probably impartial than anything produced in your part of the world!), but its relatively honest reporting from the likes of Iraq and Afghanistan has helped convince many people here that UK troops should not be in those countries. The UK media do tend to be informative rather than subjective in my opinion.

I can't comment on US media with any great authority, but my impression is that we in the UK are not "spoonfed" as much pro-government dogma.

RE: Would a world without religion be a better place???

Religion as such is not the problem, it's some of the proponents of it that cause all the hassle. Some idiots take their method of worship as the ONLY method of worship and punish others for not falling into line (Spanish Inquisition and other such nonsense for the past thousand years), whilst others have such a level of intolerance to others that they are simply criminal (9-11 bombers and the like).

I can't see that God (follow me on this, even if you're not a believer) is sitting on high and happy at the murders carried out (supposedly) in His / Her name.

But if it wasn't religion, mankind would find some other reason to hate and kill.

RE: The Next Superpower in the World

All this technical stuff....inventions that kills people, or irritate people (mobile phones, i-players etc), or that make your life more stressful. Who cares who invented them?

Single malt Scotch - invented in Scotland, drunk in Heaven and generously exported to the rest of the world.

We have a winner!!

I would love someone to invent......................

Indicators for taxis / personal music devices that can only be heard by the person with the flamin' earphones plugged into their ears / mobile phones that don't work on public transport or whilst the user is walking down the street trying to text and bumping into people.

Feel free to add to this list.

RE: Can a Christian Be Left Wing?

I reckon that the original Christian was a left winger; if you take left wing to mean having a conscience about your fellow man / woman, rather than the more self-obsessed right wing attitude that abounds too much nowadays.

RE: Where would you travel to if money was no object

I'd go round Italy for a month by rail, stopping off and staying a night or so in any nice-looking town or city.

RE: Taliban Systematicly Use Torture and Children as Tools of War

Because they wouldn't feel that their country was being occupied by a foreign power and maybe they would get along fine, rather than being set up to kill each other for someone else's benefit. If they want to live in the 1400s let them. This is a war that can't be won; get the hell out.

All that banging of your head is getting to you. Take a break. You deserve it.

RE: Taliban Systematicly Use Torture and Children as Tools of War

A solution might be for the occupying forces to get the hell out of Afghanistan.

RE: Iraq: What the Americans leaving behind?????

Thousands of Iraqis killed; civil war imminent; muslim fundamentalism stirred up and a lot of poor young soldiers taken home in body bags. And for what? Weapons of mass destruction that no one has found yet and for George W Bush's ego.

A great legacy from that half-wit Bush and his lapdog Tony Blair.

As a Scot said many centuries ago of the Romans, "They create a wilderness and call it civilisation."

The only winners are the US businesses which have benefitted from "recostruction" - and that's paid for by the invading forces anyway.

RE: Queen's income frozen

Aye, the impetus went out of the band when Freddie Mercury died.

RE: Greatest Album of ALL Time

I saw them perform this live on tour about a thousand years ago in Glasgow. This was at a time when bands didn't bother with any sort of stage show. Gabriel was incredible.

How far they fell with all the stadium muzak muck after he left. Still, they're laughing all the way to the bank, I suppose, so what do they care?

RE: Greatest Album of ALL Time

"Screamadelica" by Primal Scream. Miles above anything else they did and truly groundbreaking at the time.

My favourite at the moment is to watch Mogwai's "Burning" dvd which accompanied the cd of the same name. It's a live performance in NY. On sale at all good record shops, and on youtube, of course!

RE: Work to live or live to work????

I work to pay off my post-marital debts and to put my daughter through university. Deep joy!

RE: Difference between Lorry and truck

Lorry - a vehicle that is in one piece (a flatbed, for example). Truck - a vehicle that is made up of two pieces- the cab /front wheels, and the bit attached to it that takes the cargo.

I just made that up, but it's how I would differentiate the two if asked.

RE: How do you drink your beer?

ALCOHOLISM IS NOT A DISEASE IT IS SATAN’S HANDIWORKquote]

Maybe if some of you religious zealots cooled out with a nice beer, religious-fueled atrocities like the Crusades, 9-11, the Spanish Inquisition, the occupation of Gaza, Northern Ireland's carry-on etc might not have happened.

Jesus enjoyed a glass of wine; it's only when you overdo it that alcohol is a problem.

Me, I like a dark beer. German alt, or Scottish heavy / export. Not too cold.

RE: Why Are There SOOOOOO Many Unattractive Men Under 50 on Here?

Ugly guys need luvvin' too!

RE: Which one is the Nobel Currency in the World ?

Hopefully it is East German Ostmarks. I have a million of them.

RE: The Euro & Euro zone

The Pound (British, not just English!) ISN'T strong. For all the problems the Euro has, it's almost one-for-one with the Pound. Remember when you could get three Euros for two Pounds? The Pound has been sinking like a stone for years, I'm afraid.

Despite the problems with the Euro, I'd have an independent Scotland with the Euro. The Pound is a dead duck.

As for the Irish gent blaming Europe for Ireland's problems, he should be looking a bit closer to home for the ones to blame. Ireland, like Britain, pursued a boom-or-bust policy and it bust! Europe gave Ireland a great boost, but Ireland's politicians and its bankers screwed it up. Just like in Britain.

The countries in trouble have got to start living within their means. It that results in their far-too generous welfare system (e.g. in Greece) being made more affordable, then that's what must happen.

RE: only spammers around?

Hey, a couple of twenty-something beauties contacted me this week on here and they made my day! Apparently I'm such a wonderful guy!

Keep the scammers and spammers!!

RE: cultural barrier in a relationship

Depends on how you approach it. A different culture could add something to the relationship. Different habits, as you suggest, could well be a real barrier, but that has nothing to do with culture or religion.

RE: where is best warm, cheap and safe place to retire?

If you're Hugh Hefner, it looks like it's some 25 year old's bed! Jealous? Me???

RE: Male Mid-Life Crisis Challenge

For my midlife crisis, I got a couple of tattoos and a wonderful girl almost 20 years younger than me. It was a great 6 months....but, of course, it all ended in tears!

Probably should have travelled instead!!

Best of luck.

RE: is communism possible?

Yip; stroll into some of the ghettos in the States, or some of the poor areas in the UK, and see what some people have as the true face of capitalism. The grim reality for some people in the prosperous West is a million miles away from the great dream of life that is portrayed on TV.

As the rich woman once said, "Let them eat cake!"

RE: is communism possible?

Communism, like every other "movement" (capitalism, established religions etc) suffers from human beings distorting the concept for their own ends.

Was Stalinism the same as communism? No. Was the Spanish Inquisition representative of Catholicism? No. Are Al Quaeda representative of Islam? No.

We take what could be a winning way of life and turn it into a nightmare. It's what human beings do.

As an aside, communism probably worked for the Cubans. They may be poor, but they're a helluva better off than their neighbours who live under what passes for capitalism.

RE: shopping in dubai

I've read nothing which would persuade me to go to Dubai on holiday! Is it just another place for the mega-rich to show off, or does it have something to offer in the way of culture?

RE: Patriotism

For too many people, patriotism equals xenophobia. Love your country, and respect everyone else's rather than hate them!

RE: What U Gonna Do ?

Hope that time is, indeed, a great healer.

RE: Your Country's motto.

Scotland's real motto is: “Nemo me impune lacessit”, which translates roughly as "No one attacks me with impunity". Basically, if you have a got at us, you'll get it back in spades! Sounds about right!

My home city of Glasgow has its own metto - "Lord, Let Glasgow Flourish by the preaching of Thy Word and the Praising of Thy Name". Shortened nowadays to "Let Glasgow Fourish". We're far too heathen nowadays to have the full motto.
