For those of you who are working people, why do you think you work as you do?

I have always worked, and missed work when my children were babies. I have never had to claim unemployment benefits, and I don´t say that out of pride, just that I have always been able to find gainful employment, sometimes not what I would have preferred, as was the case when my children were at school, but work nevertheless with a salary.

Nowadays, as a single woman, I feel more and more that I am working to live, even though I love my job, because I worry at times about the future. I have to support myself at the end of the day. I know my adult children would never see me in dire straits, but I don´t want them to look after me. Do you know what I mean?

My children think I´m crazy to harbour worries about the future and have told me so, but....dunno I can´t help it.

I often think that at a certain time of life, people get together only for these reasons, security etc etc....I dont want that at all.

I to know I am working to live. And the sad part is I have done it both ways in my life and I was happier when I lived to work. I have always been able to find work too. So I have never drawn unemployment. And I know that in the end I count on me to pay my bills. I do not want to change the position to where my children are my care givers. blues But who knows.....one day it might be that way. There is no guarantees in life. At least I have children who would try and take care of me. Some of my friends children....well no need to go there uh oh grin

Sorry I wanted to comment on this too. I am trying to cook brownie bites and type on here laugh

Even if you are in a relationship you might think is secure does not mean it always will be. Life has a way of shaking one awake from time to time so don't no one be thinking a relationship gives you a free pass. bouquet

I live, to live.

Work is something I do that fills up the hours in the day, when I'd be bored otherwise.

I love my job, and would happily do it for free.

Therefore, I don't live to work, as that could mean there's nothing else in my life apart from work, and I certainly don't work to live, as my life is comfortable enough as it is.

I agree with you. Since my children were small I have always worked part time, enough to manage to provide for them and also have time with them. Earlier this year I found myself seeking full time employment as due to cuts, higher taxes etc it is now necessary to work twice the hours for the same pay. I also still have 2 in full time education.

Was saying to a friend recently that I would have hoped as I got older I would be able to work less, hasnt turned out that way though.

Oh I agree, and I do that too, but I´m not young and with the advancing years I think about my retirement years.

However much I love my job, I know that I could be earning much more if I moved back to the UK, and that is my dilemma. The quality of life, my health etc etc is, and will continue to be, much better here in Spain, but the salaries aren´t nearly so good here, hence the reason I work extra hours teaching private students. That also means I´m working more than I would really like, and another reason why my relationships flounder (in the real world that is). sigh

I understand what your saying C, but I just gave up a life I loved in Mexico because it was becoming financially unfeasable. Its not about being rich, its about not eating catfood in my old age. wine

I truly wish that I could work to live or even live to work. Unemployed for 2+ yrs, no income save small student stipends, no savings (gone through) and no assistance.

It is almost as if looking for gainful employment is a full time job for me, along with attending school. I wake up every morning hoping that I will receive a call or a letter offering me employment and I go to sleep each night wondering if I will ever find employment and wondering what the future holds.

None of that was said to gain sympathy, I am very grateful for the little I do have and I strive to stay positive but sometimes I do wake up from horrific dreams regarding the future and wonder if I will ever be in a position to command my own life again.

I agree with you Jan that sometimes at a certain point in life, people come together for the security factor. I hear my own mother talk about finding someone who will take care of her and I hear some acquaintances talk about how they need someone who is financially secure to take care of them, it's sort of scary. I hope that I never fall into that trap.
