Well, background checks would pretty much wipe out the Rep candidates credibility.

RE: Dear Mr Obama

Although I honor all our veterans and those who are serving America in uniform I'm tired of death and war. War is exactly what the terrorist want, to them it is holy and a quick trip to virgins waiting in heaven.

They are operating in groups funded by many fanatics, cut some down and more are born to die a holy death. I think we need to stop them yes, but we need to stop the countries supporting them, the leaders leading them.

They love the sound of a saber rattling, it harbors more blood, more death more fighting of the unbelievers. I think our military running around on the ground are doing their job while our leaders don't do their job. There needs to be sanctions, diplomacy and pressure put on the people, the big corporations profiting, and the countries promoting and funding this madness. We are still doing business with them for the oil they have.

Now McCain is a veteran, as he so often reminds us is his qualification for the presidency. While he was a POW he collaborated with the enemy for 3 of his 5 years speaking against the US, promoting the VC and giving information. This only stopped when a new regime took power in VN, one who was interested in winding down the war.

Later McCain helped to block the search for his brother POW's, refusing to release vital paperwork from the government and acting very angry and agressive towards the people who wanted to search for the missing (Kerry was part of that scene too).

He married big money and wallows in big lobby money now surrounded by lobbiest. & of his current top 10 advisor's belong to big money lobby's. So how is he going to bring any reform working so closely with them at his side?

He's a mouthpiece for those guys and a sell out. I'm voting for Obama.

RE: Obama falling to pieces

It's very good to see so many of the CS'ers are galvanized by this election, have opinions and will vote. America had become apathetic I think, seems to be waking up now.

I've spent most of my time here on the political forums talking to only a few people, some of them I like, some of them I' love, and lots of them make me crazy.

Still talking with them helped me clarify my own positions and gave me insight into theirs so it's all good. Now, seeing all these new threads popping up and new people I haven't met talking, well it makes mama proud (and still makes me crazy sometimes but very proud).

In case I haven't made my choice clear I'm for Obama, but it's wonderful to hear Americas voice and to see her rise. She is the one who needs to win not a party. cheering

RE: Obama for President.............A clear soloution is prosperity and peace!!!

And Dude this comment of yours about checking with your sources, that sounds para military to me. What sources and why aren't you just doing searches like the rest of us? Can you explain this to me please?

RE: U.S. Intelligence Sees It Russia’s Way

Sorry I wouldn't take Russia's view of the conflict anymore than I would take Georgia's view. The UK is pretty good at unveiling things but I would need an unbiased link to put any faith in this story.

As for myself I do think Georgia might have gotten a bit arrogant with all the US support I know it was receiving, however none of that excuses the excessive retribution by Russia or the promises Russia made and broke repeatedly during the conflict.

I think it was more about the oil pipeline running through Georgia more than anything else, oily greed.

RE: U.S. Intelligence Sees It Russia’s Way

Well Kid I know sense isn't common and intelligence doesn't mean wisdom. That much I know for sure.laugh laugh laugh

Uh kommersant.com is hardly unbiased, it is a Russian daily online site. There is an article here but not the one you've posted.

The other site made no mention of US Intelligence. confused

RE: Presidential debates.

It is human nature to see the sins of your opponents and be blind to your own. Slander is fine for the other guy but shameful when it is directed at your guy (or girl).

I am a equal opportunity offender, none of them belong to me, I am watching them all.

Gotta scoot off for a few min. to let my brother wake up with the PC and go to work. Back soon. teddybear

RE: Presidential debates.

You can read the article and decide for yourself Wish but my take on Sarah is that she is human and 'tho strong would often use that strength to her personal advantage. This seems to be one of those examples.

Running for VP she as well as the Rep. party is portraying her as the great reformer, almost perfect in every way. She (and they) are lying directly and by omission about some of her actions. That is what is making these things a big deal to me, the pretensions to perfection, the lies and the head trips.

She ain't the Annie Oakly saint of reform. She is just another politician.

RE: Presidential debates.

I understand how you feel but the civil rights amendment tells a different story my friend, one I adhere to.

You can no more get rid of the far right than you can the far left. Each would have to go or neither according to our constitution.

We must instead learn to talk with each other and listen to what is being said. comfort

RE: Presidential debates.

There was a lot of squealing (sorry for the pun) about the excessive earmarks going to Alaska , hence the brakes on building the Bridge to Nowhere and Ted Stevens, Alaska's senator, being under investigation. In the letter you posted it mentioned the corruption and greed of the politicians that Sarah cleaned up, that is after she played ball with them.

The receive plenty of Federal support more per capita than any other state. This has continued under Sarah's term as Governor but she has cut it back some. She has often stated she wass going to get as much as possible for her state.

RE: Presidential debates.

True she did clean out a lot of the old administration. She has a record of doing that as mayor or Wasilla too, with "loyalty tests" to her in the mix. Not a bad thing JMO.

But she never actually moved into the governors mansion or to Juneau. She continued to live in Wasilla and commuted 45 min to a office in Ancorage. She also commuted to her house in Juneau.

Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home
Taxpayers Also Funded Family's Travel

ANCHORAGE, Sept. 8 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.

The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife...

Speaking from Palin's Anchorage office, Leighow said Palin dealt with the plane and also trimmed other expenses, including forgoing a chef in the governor's mansion because she preferred to cook for her family. The first family's travel is an expected part of the job, she said....
___________________

That cook is still cooking for her family BTW. Palin renamed her position, she is till cooking for the Palin family and has been doing so, she was never fired.

RE: Presidential debates.

Now they are getting more thanks to Sarah, and are very happy with that. A point in my earlier post was Alaska is "...the only state in the union with no income tax and no sales tax.", so they are not paying as much into our government system are they? Yet they receive more money per capita in federal earmark money.

RE: Presidential debates.

Oops thanks for correcting me. Long time problems are affected by the decisions of the powers that be for good or ill not always created by them.

I don't agree with and have been very distressed by much of what has happened these last 8 years, but I don't have any "Monsters in my Closet". I cleaned house years ago, now I try to live now, and see clearly around me what is happening now.

RE: Presidential debates.

One of the things she did was complete building the road that went to the bridge, she said it would open up that sparsely settled area for future development, the rest she spread around.

RE: Presidential debates.

There are some other facts to go with that list. I'm not going to resurrect the looooong post from the Dude thread but I did get all the earmarks from 2006 for Obama, they were for Education, Hospitals, Road repair and Water Tanks, he also got some for the poor with Aids, troubled youths and such. Another thing he put the money into was military weapon research. He has not gotten any in 2007.

here is a link to his record of earmarks

Sarah Palin's earmarks include keeping the money slated for the Bridge and spending it ( guess they would have been able to take it back if it wasn't spent) $233 million.

Alaska’s government receives more money per capita in federal earmark money than any other state, despite being the only state in the union with no income tax and no sales tax. They fund their government primarily with petroleum money, and recently distributed oil profits to its citizens in the form of rebate checks.

RE: Presidential debates.

Good point Dave but you don't want to go there do you? A red-head feeling could flip on you. wave laugh wave

RE: Obama for President.............A clear soloution is prosperity and peace!!!

Hi LadyH, I think there were some pretty high feelings here on this thread tonight. This is actually happening to a lot of us here in America.

In just a short time the election will be here and then we all have to live with the results of that election. It causes a sense of urgency that I'm sure you'll understand, the end of this very dynamic race.

There hasn't been this much tension or heart in our election process for a long time. We now seem to not want to listen to the other guy as to have the opposition listen to us. I have been guilty of that myself.

This might end up a quiet night my friend, I just wanted to let you know it isn't you.handshake

Bush: Troops to divert to Afghanistan
Jon Ward (Contact)
Originally published 08:02 p.m., September 8, 2008, updated 04:10 a.m., September 9, 2008

President Bush will announce Tuesday the diversion of some U.S. troops from Iraq to Afghanistan, in a speech that marks a turn in focus for his administration as it approaches its last four months in office.

"As al Qaeda faces increased pressure in Iraq, the terrorists are stepping up their efforts on the front where this struggle first began: the nation of Afghanistan," said Mr. Bush's prepared remarks, which were released to the press Monday evening.

"Afghanistan's success is critical to the security of America and our partners in the free world. And for all the good work we have done in that country, it is clear we must do even more," Mr. Bush will say.

The president has decided to send a Marine battalion — which are usually between 500 to 1,500 troops originally slated for Iraq to Afghanistan in November.

In January, an Army brigade — of 3,500 to 5,000 troops — will also go to Afghanistan.

RE: Presidential debates.

That can be true too but it still usually beats the heck out of the much of the junk fed us on the campaign trail.

It bugs me when the issues aren't so much about what our country is facing and the problems needing solutions and becomes about who is prettier and has the most personality.

I'd like to hear exactly how they intend to address reform, clean up our governmental processes, reduce wasteful spending, create jobs for Americans, and yes how they intend to deal with the wars and the rumors of war.

You know, real answers not just "Because I say I can".

RE: Presidential debates.

I take it that you are using the royal "we" as in too many Americans are influenced by personality and talking points? That is often sadly true.

sigh

RE: Sarah Palin's Banned Books!

the story continues;

Four days before the exchange at the City Council, Emmons got a letter from Palin asking for her resignation. Similar letters went to police chief Irl Stambaugh, public works director Jack Felton and finance director Duane Dvorak. John Cooper, a fifth director, resigned after Palin eliminated his job overseeing the city museum.

Palin told the Daily News back then the letters were just a test of loyalty as she took on the mayor's job, which she'd won from three-term mayor John Stein in a hard-fought election. Stein had hired many of the department heads. Both Emmons and Stambaugh had publicly supported him against Palin.

Emmons survived the loyalty test and a second one a few months later. She resigned in August 1999, two months before Palin was voted in for a second mayoral term.

RE: Sarah Palin's Banned Books!

Morning everyone. wave

The list is false, but it is true she pressured the librarian Mary Ellen Emmons. It seems to tie in with her current Troopergate investigation going on right now. 2 sides of the same coin perhaps.

Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.

According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired. The censorship issue was not mentioned as a reason for the firing. The letter just said the new mayor felt Emmons didn't fully support her and had to go.

In December 1996, Emmons told her hometown newspaper, the Frontiersman, that Palin three times asked her -- starting before she was sworn in -- about possibly removing objectionable books from the library if the need arose.

RE: Sarah Palin's Banned Books!

Well I invite you to look at this video of Sarah in her church before she was nominated VP yet not too long ago. She mentions he son who is 19 and going to Iraq in it.

I found one on the Alaskin Air Nat. Guard

4238012.story

WASHINGTON -- Seeking to buttress the foreign policy credentials of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Republicans have repeatedly cited the vice presidential nominee's experience as commander of the Alaska National Guard.

As governor, Palin oversees military units whose duties include serving overseas, search-and-rescue missions across the state's vast landscape and manning key elements of the U.S. missile defense system at Ft. Greely.

But foreign deployments of Guard units and the operation of national defense assets like the Ft. Greely missile interceptors are not the responsibility of state governors. Those functions come under the regular U.S. military chain of command.

Commanding the Alaska National Guard is hardly an insignificant job, military officials say. Still, they acknowledge that it provides little, if any, foreign policy experience.

Overseeing a state Guard is a "chief executive role" with real management responsibilities, said Mark Allen, a spokesman for the National Guard Bureau, the federal office that coordinates state National Guards.

"I don't think people should think it is a casual relationship, or is like the king putting on the medals," Allen said. "It is not that at all. But the role of the governor is to use the Guard to help the citizens of a state, as opposed to declaring war on a neighboring state."

The Alaska National Guard is unusual in that its jobs include manning part of the U.S. missile defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion works on interceptor missiles designed to shoot down intercontinental missiles.

Members of the Alaska National Guard also were deployed to Iraq, and Palin visited their unit in July 2007. The McCain campaign has pointed to that experience as an example of Palin's foreign policy background...

Since governors have no role in overseeing Guard members federalized for service in Iraq, military experts said that should not count as foreign policy experience....

Closer to home, the bread-and-butter duties of most state National Guards are natural disasters. During Palin's 21 months in office, there has been one declared disaster: widespread flooding in June and July this year. Palin quickly signed a disaster declaration, officials said. The Guard's role was limited to providing two water tanks and 30,000 sandbags to local authorities.

The Alaska Air National Guard, with 1,946 service members, is involved in an exceptional number of search-and-rescue missions. Since Palin became governor in December 2006, the Air Guard has flown 521 missions, saving 200 lives and assisting with the rescue of 77 more people, said Kalei Brooks, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs...
