Proof? Simple common sense Conrad. All these fuels.. coal, oil, natural gas and yes even uranium are finite in their quantity. When the supply starts dwindling the prices rise- basic law of supply and demand, your smart enough to understand that.
And supplies are dwindling. And in that school of thought nuclear power will be more economically viable to oil when the price per barrel hits 200- 300 dollar per (if not more) as it surely will within the next decade.
There are still an estimated 909 billion tonnes of proven coal reserves worldwide, enough to last at least 155 years. But coal is a fossil fuel and a dirty energy source that will only add to global warming.
Natural gas
The natural gas fields in Siberia, Alaska and the Middle East should last 20 years longer than the world's oil reserves but, although cleaner than oil, natural gas is still a fossil fuel that emits pollutants. It is also expensive to extract and transport as it has to be liquefied.
Hydrogen fuel cells
Hydrogen fuel cells would provide us with a permanent, renewable, clean energy source as they combine hydrogen and oxygen chemically to produce electricity, water and heat. The difficulty, however, is that there isn't enough hydrogen to go round and the few clean ways of producing it are expensive.
Biofuels
Ethanol from corn and maize has become a popular alternative to oil. However, studies suggest ethanol production has a negative effect on energy investment and the environment because of the space required to grow what we need.
Renewable energy
Oil-dependent nations are turning to renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric, solar and wind power to provide an alternative to oil but the likelihood of renewable sources providing enough energy is slim.
Nuclear
Fears of the world's uranium supply running out have been allayed by improved reactors and the possibility of using thorium as a nuclear fuel. But an increase in the number of reactors across the globe would increase the chance of a disaster and the risk of dangerous substances getting into the hands of terrorists."
Again, yes there are risks with nuclear power but, it will work until renewable sources are developed as they should have been decades ago.
Id love to have other options also, the problem being that there arent. If you want to heat your home with coal be my guest.
My point is that oil supplies are on the downslide, if I remember properly, we will have exhausted it within 100- 150 years. Each year it will become more and more expensive. Alternative sources of energy should have been started decades ago but that initiative was crushed by big oil. And they are still fighting its development tooth and nail. Plain and simple truth there.
All these types of energy are exhaustible. The more you shift to these other forms of fossil fuels besides oil, they will become exhausted that much faster and then what will you have?
Is nuclear power completely safe? No, it is not. Is it a viable alternative to oil... yes.
Oh and to the individual blaming this on Obama, he has tried to push a renewable energy package through only to be blocked by guess who.. your Republican friends.
With oil supplies on the downside it will be more and more expensive both is cost and in security. Speaking as a citizen of the US only... the big oil companies have been raping us for years, refusing and/ or blocking the development of so called 'green' energy. I vote that they were blocking it myself. Anyone want to guess how close we are/ might have been to cold fusion but was suppressed by big oil? But I digress.
As it is, there is no alternative to oil at present but nuclear, at least on a national power grid level. Wind/ solar and geo- thermal simply do not have the development of nuclear.
Right now it is a necessary evil like government. Its not safe but, it is the only truly viable alternative to oil that we have.
Woo Hooo, just got my copy of Troughtons 'Invasion' storyline. The missing episodes were recreated via animation and recordings made by viewers. From what Ive read, they were recreated very well.
Weeping angels are the best monsters ever!! Steven Moffett outdid himself when he created them in the Blink episode. The new series 2 parter of Time of Angels and Flesh And Stone was amazing also.
It was FOX and they also messed with the mythology of the series as well. Im jealous of you both... never met any of the Doctors or more importantly, the companions
Perhaps the most dangerous thing about this ruling is that it opens the door for foreign corporations doing business on US soil to have a very huge, very direct impact on both international as well as domestic policy.
Even if the Wiki conrad posted is correct.. it probably is to a large extent. That is, if you can trust anything posted on a Wiki site. (It really doesnt take much effort to type in a name on Google does it?)
The point made by Schumer and also shared by republicans as well such as Snow, McCain, Feingold is still very very correct.
That this decision is wrong, it is harmful to this country. It is a gift to Big Oil, to the Health Care industry and to Wall Street and the Banks.
"By a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court on Thursday rolled back restrictions on corporate spending on federal campaigns." **source- huffington post**
As Chuck Schumer (NY- Senate) says: "This ruling guarentees the winners of the next election to be not Democrat or Republican, but the corporations."
With this ruling, it seems clear that this republic is history. Oh, maybe it will have the veneer of a republic much like the Roman Principate kept the illusion of republic up for quite a long time. But, in the end, its history.
After leaving a West Virginia Courthouse. A tearful woman looks to her now ex husband and gently asks... "Does this mean we aint brother and sister no more too?"
What kind of phone do you have and how do you like it and why?
I just picked up a Sprint HTC Hero (Android) smartphone this past Saturday and love it. It has a few quirks but is all around solid. I was looking at Blackberries at first. Specifically the Tour, but researched this one and I havnt looked back yet.
RE: Nuclear Power... high power - high risk. Is it worth it?
Here ya goOil (along with the banks) own the government. The can block whatever they want to.
