The Mark: Scientist Claims Human Microchip Implants Will Become “Not Optional”

And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name.…

Revelations 13:16-17

Technologies designed specifically to track and monitor human beings have been in development for at least two decades.

In the virtual realm, software programs are now capable of watching us in real time, going so far as to make predictions about our future behaviors and sending alerts to the appropriate monitoring station depending on how a computer algorithm flags your activities. That is in and of itself a scary proposition.
**
It’s not possible to interact with society in a meaningful way by not having a mobile phone. I think human implants are likely to go along a very similar route. It would be such a disadvantage to not have the implant that it essentially becomes not optional. (source)

Your initial reaction to this idea may be one of disbelief. There’s no way society would accept such a device. Why would anyone want to implant this in their body?

Consider for a moment where we are right now. For decades Americans rejected the notion that they would submit to being tracked or recorded.

Yet, just about every American now carries a mobile phone. They’re so prevalent, in fact, that many consider it a “right,” prompting the government to actually provide subsidies to those who can’t afford one on their own.

Embedded in every one of those phones is an RFID chip that can track our every movement via GPS or cell tower triangulation. Moreover, those microphones and cameras that come standard on every phone can be remotely activated by law enforcement surveillance systems, a capability that has existed since the early 2000's.

But as intrusive as these devices are, they are accepted as the norm by billions of people world wide. Not only that, but no one had to “force” them on us. We are, it seems, the masters of our own enslavement. And we pay top dollar to have the best tracking device money can buy!
**
And it is easy to imagine what a tyrannical government could do with this kind of technology. If it wanted to, it could use it to literally track the movements and behavior of everyone.
**
And one day, this kind of technology will likely be so pervasive that you won’t be able to open a bank account, get a credit card or even buy anything without having either your hand or your face scanned first.
**
First, the technologies will need to be generally accepted by society. It’ll start with real-time consumer based products like Google Glass. The older generations may reject it, but in a couple of years you can bet that tens of millions of kids, teens and younger adults will be roaming the streets while sporting cool shades, interactive web surfing and the capability to record everything around them and upload it to the internet instantly.

Next, as we’re already seeing from early adopters, RFID chips will be voluntarily implanted under our skin for everything from access to high security buildings to grocery store purchases.

Eventually, once the concept is generally accepted by the majority, it will become our new “social security number.”

To gain access to official services, you’ll need to be a verified human. Without verification you won’t even be able to purchase a six pack of beer, let alone get medical care or a driver’s license.
**
In essence, we’ll soon live in a world of Always On Monitoring.

Faith, Hope, and Patience

How the resurrection restores hope

The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead can’t be ignored. It changed human history, and it has changed countless lives. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we can have hope. Our hope is not in technology. Our hope is not in human solutions. Our hope is certainly not in politicians. And our hope is not in preachers. Our hope is in God.

It has been said that man can live 40 days without food, three days without water, about eight minutes without air, but not one second without hope. Have you lost hope? Has something happened to you recently that has caused you to feel like a rudderless ship without any real hope or purpose in life?
**
It’s interesting to note the people to whom Jesus chose to appear, post-resurrection. He could have appeared before Pilate and said, “Remember me?” He could have appeared before Caesar and said, “You think you are a god? Check this out. Years from now, all they will remember you for is a salad, but I will change human history.” But instead, Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene. Perhaps it was because she was among the last at the cross and the first one at the tomb. It seems that Jesus went out of his way to reach out to ordinary people, to obscure people, to people who were often forgotten by others.

We also have this interesting detail about that unexpected encounter on the road to Emmaus: “So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him” (Luke 24:15–16 NKJV). Jesus was traveling incognito, and the Gospel of Mark adds this detail: “He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country” (Mark 16:12, emphasis added). They were walking along, not realizing that Jesus himself was walking with them.

The problem was they were going in the wrong direction. They should have either stayed in Jerusalem with the other disciples or went with them to Galilee, where Jesus told them to go. Instead, they wanted to put as much distance between themselves and the cross as possible.

But instead of giving up on them, Jesus joined them on their journey and asked a question: “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” (verse 17 NLT).

So one of them said, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days” (verse 18).

So what did Jesus do to restore their hope? He took them to the Scriptures and explained them. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for that sermon. I wonder what he told them. I wonder whether he said, “Hey, guys, remember Psalm 22 that says, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’ and ‘They pierced My hands and My feet’? That was speaking of the crucifixion.”
**
They still didn’t know it was Jesus, but they knew this much. The guy really knew the Scriptures. They liked him. And they found that as they listened to him, their hearts were being rekindled.
**
When you are downhearted, when you are discouraged, the last thing you want to do is run from God. You should run to God. Go to God with your troubles. Go to God with your questions. Go to God with your pain. Go to God with your complaints. The main thing is, go to God. Don’t run from him.

Like the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, sometimes we don’t realize that God is with us. He is with us all the time. He is with us on the sunny days, and he is with us on the cloudy days. He is with us on the mountaintops, and he is with us in the valleys. He is with us in all that we go through in life.

A Cry For Health

Culturally Emotionally Stifled Japanese Learn How to Cry in Public!

by Power Point Paradise • March 8, 2014

Japanese attend crying seminars to improve physical and mental health! I’ve heard of laughter therapy for relieving stress, but I didn’t know the reverse existed as well. In Japan, people gather in groups to let the boo-hoos out. These ‘crying seminars’ are conducted by Takashi Saga, who calls himself a ‘tears sommelier’. “Selecting wines that matches food is similar to my job,” he said. “I introduce books, movies and videos that touch the people’s emotion.”

“Crying doesn’t have a good image in Japan,” Saga added. “People believe you should not cry in front of people, that it’s weak.” So twice a month, Saga organizes a ‘ruikatsu’ – a crying for joy seminar. When people get emotional and cry, he believes that life’s burdens, tensions and frustrations melt away. “Laughing can only release stress at that moment. But studies show the stress release from crying lasts for a week. Crying is better for your physical and mental health.”

It turns out that Saga might actually be right. Some scientific studies have proven that when we cry for emotional reasons, our tears contain the same kind of hormones released by the body during physical stress. Most people start his sessions with a poker face and a ‘try and make me’ kind of attitude. But the activities that Saga plans for his class always ensure that no one leaves dry-eyed.

For instance, this one session started off with a traditional story teller narrating a sad tale. This was followed by a video of emotional scenes with Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ playing in the background. Pretty soon, everyone in the room was crying. Aya Nemoto, a participant, said: “The story about parent and child touches my emotion, and I can’t stop crying. I released my stress here.”

“I became highly emotional and couldn’t stop crying. I hardly cry at home, but I cried here,” said Kengo Tsuda.

“When people cry here, they always show us a big smile at the end of the session,” said Saga.

Candle on a Candlestick

Embedded image from another site

by Peter Amsterdam 3/14

Manifesting God’s love to those whom He places in our path each day is at the heart of Christian life. Writing about this, the apostle Paul went so far as to say, “the love of Christ compels us”1 to do so. In whatever specific ways God leads each of us to reach our part of the world with His love, He has called us to be “the light of the world” and to “let light shine before people, so that they will see good works and give glory to Father who is in heaven.”2

Throughout the centuries—in fact, since the earliest days of Christianity—Christians have often reached the world through becoming known as a “force for good” in their community. Even when others didn’t necessarily embrace the Christians’ faith or understand their religion, or when the Christians were persecuted and maligned, their kind deeds and good works shone brightly before all men, resulting in people wanting to know what made them so different from much of society. As the apostle Peter instructed, “Live such good lives among the that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God.”3

As we each strive to reach out and offer a helping hand in our local communities; as we provide assistance—spiritual or practical, or both—to those God puts in our path; as we do our part to bring His love to others and to better their lives in whatever ways we are able, our good example will grow and serve as a “candle on a candlestick.”4

By reaching our neighbors, and translating our faith into tangible actions that express our love and concern, we can be living examples of God’s love. Even if you don’t have a lot of time and resources, you can still reach out to your community and take the initiative to fill a need, showing solidarity when possible, and an interest in the welfare and quality of life of others. In so doing, you’ll be putting God’s love into action.

Near Death Experience

Ohio truck driver saw heaven for 45 minutes, then God sent him back

by Power Point Paradise • March 2, 2014

Embedded image from another site

Truck driver Brian Miller,41, was delivering metal to a warehouse in Streetsboro, Ohio, when he felt a sudden tightness in his chest.

At first he thought the tightness might be due to a frigid blast from the polar vortex or even asthma, but as the pain sharply intensified, he dialed 9-1-1. “I’m a truck driver and I think I’m having a heart attack,” he told the dispatcher.

Paramedics brought him to University Hospitals’ Ahuja Medical Center, where doctors discovered a complete blockage of his main artery, a condition sometimes nicknamed the ‘widow maker’ due to its often-fatal results. Former NBC News Washington Bureau Chief Tim Russert died suddenly from a similar blockage.

After Dr. William Wolf performed emergency surgery to clear the blockage, Miller seemed to be recovering. He was sitting up in bed, talking, and in good spirits, but then his heart careened into ventricular fibrillation – or V-fib – an acute medical emergency.

Miller in ICU

“His heart was quivering in there; it wasn’t able to pump,” ICU nurse Emily Bishop told Fox8 News in Cleveland. She frantically called “Code Blue” for CPR and a half-dozen doctors and nurses rushed in to see if they could restore Miller’s heart.

If a V-fib continues for more than a few seconds, it often moves into a “flatline” condition in such situations, with cardiogenic shock and complete loss of blood flow. Sudden death usually results in mere moments.

They knew that if Miller was not revived within about five minutes, he could sustain irreversible brain damage and possibly become brain dead.

Despite their heroic efforts, Miller began to slip away. “He had no heart rate. He had no blood pressure. He had no pulse; his brain had no oxygen for 45 minutes,” Bishop recounted. “We shocked him four times and it still didn’t work.”

When his heart stopped, Miller entered another dimension of reality. “I started to see a light and I started walking toward the light,” Miller told News8.

Then his eyes beheld a wondrous sight. “It opened into a most beautiful path with flowers.

His mother-in-law, Kay, who had passed away from cancer only 10 days prior to his health emergency, greeted Miller. “She was the most beautiful thing when I saw her, just like the day I first met her,” he recounted. “She looked so happy.”

Then she grabbed his arm. “It’s not your time. You don’t need to be here,” she told him. “We need to take you back. You have things to do at home.”

Her husband, Jack, stood nearby. He waved and gave Miller a smile. Then Miller’s soul returned to his body.

After 45 minutes, Miller’s pulse and normal heart function returned – something inexplicable to the medical professionals around him. “Think about it. His brain had no oxygen for 45 minutes,” nurse Bishop marveled. “So the fact that he’s up walking, talking, and laughing is amazing,” she told News8.

“When he first woke up he said he had seen my dad and mom, and he had seen the light. He was talking real shallow from all the medical equipment they had on him,” Miller’s wife, Roberta, told Fox News. She and Brian have three daughters.

Miller later told Fox News he always believed in “the Lord” and the afterlife. “I went to church a lot when I was growing up,” he recalled. “And after I got married I didn’t hardly go to church.”

Now he considers his mother-in-law his guardian angel. Before she passed away, she gave him a guardian angel figure for his truck, which says, “don’t ever drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.”

“I kiss it every day when I am driving my truck,” he noted. “There is an afterlife and people need to believe in it.”

Consensus Diabetes

Embedded image from another site

There goes another consensus. Crash diets solve diabetes in 3 weeks

by Power Point Paradise • January 6, 2014

Sometimes the consensus deniers are right, which is exactly why the term is so pointless and so profoundly unscientific.

The medical associations were unequivocal. Crash diets were a fad, unhealthy, and only slow sensible weight loss could work. So millions of people were fed expensive drugs for decades, monitored, and some even given risky bariatric surgery. Patients with Type II diabetes were expected to be treated for years, or possibly the rest of their lives. Nearly a tenth of the national health budget of the UK was spend managing diabetes. Fully 8% of the population have the condition in the US.

Now a new (albeit very very small) study cured diabetes in some cases in as little as a week with a diet that was thought to be bad. In the trial the very low calorie diet was done for 8 weeks. Sticking to 600 calories a day is not easy (some reports say it was 800 cals). It’s about a quarter of what a normal guy would eat. But it shrinks fat in the pancreas and liver, and that seemingly returns insulin levels to normal. The really amazing thing is that the benefits turn out to stay around far longer than anyone thought. A word of warning, to anyone on medical treatment: the effect on blood sugar levels can be so dramatic it could be dangerous to start such a drastic diet without talking to the doc first.

The discovery, a “radical change” in understanding of the condition, holds out the possibility that sufferers could cure themselves – if they have the willpower.

Until recently received medical wisdom was that Type 2 diabetes was largely irreversible.

Prof Taylor asked 11 volunteers, all recently diagnosed, to go on what he admitted was an “extreme diet” of specially formulated drinks and non-starchy vegetables, for eight weeks.

After just a week, pre-breakfast (‘fasting’) blood sugar levels had returned to normal, suggesting a resumption of correct pancreas function.

Gordon Parmley, 67, from Stocksfield in Northumberland, one of the volunteers, said: “At the end of the trial, I was told my insulin levels were normal and after six years, I no longer needed my diabetes tablets.

“Still today, 18 months on, I don’t take them. It’s astonishing really that a diet – hard as it was – could change my health so drastically.”

Telegraph UK

While this study is tiny (11 people), there have been others suggesting something similar, and the idea came from the way people responded to bariatric surgery (it seemed to cure their insulin problems very fast). I think this study might be the first to use MRI’s to look at the fat inside the pancreas which dropped by a quarter over the 8 weeks. Note too, these people ate a lot of salad. Not all crash diets are the same, and some of the criticisms of crash diets are fair. Plus many on the crash diet may have made long term changes after the diet.

I’m not declaring that this is definitely a cure, or that it will work for everyone (it may only apply to a certain group), but I would bet people suggesting a radical low calorie diet would once have been called dangerous quacks (or deniers?).

Embedded image from another site

*There is a gimmicky element to the promotion of this story in their use of the word “crash” diet and we can argue about the definitions, and also about whether people returned to eating their former diet (I’m guessing they didn’t). It’s possibly that this sudden weight loss may have longer term repercussions, but then we know diabetes does. Only long large trials will settle the long term view, and also find out whether people find sudden extreme diets more workable than long continuous lifestyle changes.

Your Heavenly Mansion

Embedded image from another site

by Keith Phillips

If you were told that a brand-new palatial mansion was yours, bought and paid for, would you believe it? What if it was guaranteed in writing? Wouldn’t you believe it then, and wouldn’t you want to find out where your new home was located and what it looked like? Wouldn’t you ask about the view, the neighbors, the climate, and every other detail you could think of? Wouldn’t you start dreaming of the day you would move in? And how do you suppose that news would change your life and priorities in the meantime?

Well, someone has promised you such a mansion—Jesus—and He has put it in writing. “In My Father’s house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you, that where I am, there you may be also.”1 If you have received Jesus, it’s all yours—no payments, no taxes, no upkeep. Sound too good to be true? Well, that’s just the beginning.

Even the most luxurious home won’t do you much good without good health and time to enjoy it, so God made provision for those too. “I am the resurrection and the life,” Jesus promises. “He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.”2 Eternal life in a new, supernatural body that is impervious to sickness, disease, or death is also part of the deal.3

End Time Updates

posted by Joseph Candel January 18, 2014

Man’s knowledge has increased in these last two years, as it has in other recent years, but it now heads in more dangerous directions than in the past. Scientists are experimenting with life itself–attempting to clone human beings, grow body parts and organs, fuse man and beast in embryos, genetically modify man, either directly or through foods, which work on him from the inside. They walk a perilous path, one that they do not understand. The things that they create will not unlock the doors to more and abundant life, but will instead unleash unprecedented plagues and pestilences that they do not foresee.
**
In the next 5 to 15 years we will see a rapid development in bioengineered and man-machine interfaces. This new technology is preparing the public for its future debut–the mark of the Beast (antichrist) economic system as predicted in the Bible.

“He [the False Prophet, top minister in the Antichrist's government] causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on [or 'in'] their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the Beast [the Antichrist], or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the Beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666? (Revelation 13:16-18).
**
The specter of nuclear war has come again to haunt the hearts of men. Russia has openly threatened to use its nuclear weapons, either in self-defense or in an offensive, and China has been brandishing its weapons as well. North Korea is another nation that breathes out nuclear fire and brimstone, speaking great things. India and Pakistan, volatile and angry nations, also wave their warheads. While there have been many rumors of war in recent years and decades, the threat of a nuclear war had receded into the shadows after the Berlin Wall went down in 1989. But now it has returned and multiplied, striking fear into the hearts of men.

Jesus told us that during the time of the end that there.… “shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.” (Luke 21:25-26)

Looking at the things which are coming to pass results in anxiety, stress, depression, sickness and suicide in unprecedented numbers. Fear is a common reaction to the threats of war. As people see that technology has not solved their problems, they worry and wonder. However even if there’s a terrible storm and great destruction all around you, you won’t need to fear! The Lord says, “Fear thou not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed, I am thy God!–You shall be safe in the midst of storm, in the hollow of My hand, for underneath you are My Everlasting Arms.” (Isaiah 41:10; Deuteronomy 33:27)–He is always there, He’ll never ever leave you, for He promises, “I am with you always, even to the End of the World!” (Matthew 28:20)

Jesus will brighten your life and give you peace that the Bible says even “passes your own understanding–perfect peace, because you trust in Him!” (Philippians 4:7; Isaiah.26:3) No matter how dark or stormy or difficult the outward conditions may be, in your heart the sun can always be shining, the birds can always be singing, the flowers can always be blossoming, and all can be well and happy in Him!—Jesus loves you and will come into your life right now if you’ll just ask Him into your heart! He says, “Behold, I stand at the door (of your heart) and knock. If any man hear My voice and open the door, I will come into him.” (Revelation 3:20)

A Positive Praise Post

Embedded image from another site

Written by Brian Whyte

I was inspired the other day when I read some personal accounts on a friend’s blog on the subject of praising God for His goodness in spite of daily problems and annoyances. It made me stop to think. (That’s always good!)

Generally, I am a thankful person. I post inspirational stories on my blog or send them to friends and family by email to share with them the good things that happen in my life. Still, after all these years, I wasn’t in the habit of praising God for even the “bad” things—“giving thanks always for all things to God” (Ephesians 5:20). I also wasn’t in the habit of looking for the good in everything.

But after I read my friend’s post I was reminded that the little daily things—a sandwich, a shower, a sunset, an encouraging word from a friend, a walk—are all events that are worthy of praise and thanksgiving. And what’s more, these things have the ability to catapult me into sheer, overjoyous (I made up that word) bliss. That’s quite a thought!

Previously I’d always waited for a “biggie” before I would become ecstatic—like the first time I flew on an airplane as a child, or when I attend a gathering with tons of friends, or the day I will meet my future wife or become a father or find buried treasure on a South Sea island. But that’s a lot of waiting and a lot of missed chances to be ecstatic when I could and should be truly happy and thankful to God, even if I’m just eating breakfast in the morning or receiving an email from my mom.

That’s easier said than done, you might say—and you’d be totally right. But the cool thing about reading my friend’s post was that it clicked with me that I could indeed be grateful for the same things that she was and instantly adopt the same “gratitude attitude.” See, once you start, it becomes automatic.

So let me remember my own words when I’m stuck in downtown traffic tomorrow, or when the rain is coming down in torrents and the roads, the sidewalks, and my driveway are all flooded. Those annoyances won’t matter. I can still rejoice and be glad in those times, too, when I determine to see beauty in everything that comes my way and, as an old song says, “Praise the Lord for another day of life.”

World Government

Who Runs The World?

Via The Economic Collapse

Does a shadowy group of obscenely wealthy elitists control the world?
**
The ultra-wealthy don’t run down and put their money in the local bank like you and I do. According to a report that was released last summer, the global elite have up to 32 TRILLION dollars stashed in offshore banks around the globe.
**
And of course that does not even count the money that is stashed in other locations that the study did not account for, and it does not count all of the wealth that the global elite have in hard assets such as real estate, precious metals, art, yachts, etc.
**
Today, Barack Obama and almost all members of Congress absolutely refuse to criticize the Fed, but in the past there have been some brave members of Congress that have been willing to take a stand. For example, the following quote is from a speech that Congressman Louis T. McFadden delivered to the U.S. House of Representatives on June 10, 1932…

Mr. Chairman, we have in this country one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Banks. The Federal Reserve Board, a Government board, has cheated the Government of the United States and the people of the United States out of enough money to pay the national debt. The depredations and iniquities of the Federal Reserve Board has cost this country enough money to pay the national debt several times over. This evil institution has impoverished and ruined the people of the United States, has bankrupted itself, and has practically bankrupted our Government. It has done this through the defects of the law under which it operates, through the maladministration of that law by the Federal Reserve Board, and through the corrupt practices of the moneyed vultures who control it.
**
The elite also exert a tremendous amount of influence through various secret societies (Skull and Bones, the Freemasons, etc.), through some very powerful think tanks and social clubs (the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission, the Bilderberg Group, the Bohemian Grove, Chatham House, etc.), and through a vast network of charities and non-governmental organizations (the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the World Wildlife Fund, etc.).

And of course the elite own most of our politicians as well. The following is a quote from journalist Lewis Lapham…
**
Are you starting to get the picture?

There is a reason why the ultra-wealthy are referred to as “the establishment”. They have set up a system that greatly benefits them and that allows them to pull the strings.

So who runs the world?

They do. In fact, they even admit as much.

David Rockefeller wrote the following in his 2003 book entitled “Memoirs”…

“For more than a century, ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents such as my encounter with Castro to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as ‘internationalists’ and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure — one world, if you will. If that is the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it.”

There is so much more that could be said about all of this. In fact, an entire library of books could be written about the power and the influence of the ultra-wealthy international bankers that run the world.

But hopefully this is enough to at least get some conversations started.

US Intelligence Seal

‘Nothing is beyond our reach’: Evil octopus strangling the world becomes latest US intelligence seal

Billions of dollars annually are being used to fund operations conducted by the United States intelligence community, the likes of which allow the government to eavesdrop on emails, listen to world leaders’ phone calls and about everything in-between.

One thing that budget hasn’t bought, however, is subtlety. The US National Reconnaissance Office launched a top-secret surveillance satellite into space Thursday evening, and the official emblem for the spy agency’s latest mission is, well, certainly accurate, to say the least.

The U.S. National Reconnaissance Office launched a new spy satellite Thursday evening on mission NROL-39 — and the new logo and tagline are quite an eye opener.

In preparation for launch, the NROL-39 payload, encapsulated within a 5-meter diameter payload faring, is transported and mated to its United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V booster at Vandenberg’s Space Launch Complex-3.

The new logo features a giant, world-dominating octopus, its sucker-covered tentacles encircling the planet while it looks on with determination, a steely glint in its enormous eye. The logo carries a five-word tagline: “Nothing is beyond our reach.”

Christopher Soghoian, principal technologist and senior policy analyst with the ACLU, raised a quizzical eyebrow at the new slogan.

“Advice to @ODNIgov: You may want to downplay the massive dragnet spying thing right now. This logo isn’t helping,” he wrote.

An agency spokeswoman told Forbes that there’s a very good reason for the symbol: The octopus is intelligent, and therefore a good emblem for an intelligence agency.

“NROL-39 is represented by the octopus, a versatile, adaptable, and highly intelligent creature. Emblematically, enemies of the United States can be reached no matter where they choose to hide,” said Karen Furgerson, a spokeswoman for the NRO. “‘Nothing is beyond our reach’ defines this mission and the value it brings to our nation and the warfighters it supports, who serve valiantly all over the globe, protecting our nation.”

The NROL-39 mission was classified, as are nearly all missions and satellites launched by the secretive NRO. It was carried aloft by a United Launch Alliance rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 11:13 p.m. PST, according to NASAspaceflight.com. Because the launch trajectory matched that used by other launches, it was likely carrying a third satellite for the agency’s radar reconnaissance fleet, the site said.

Along with its secretive payload, the rocket also carried the Government Experimental Multi-Satellite (GEMSat) payload, which contained 12 “nanosatellites” that will perform a variety of science missions.

The NRO mission is to design, build, launch, and maintain America’s intelligence satellites.

“Whether creating the latest innovations in satellite technology, contracting with the most cost-efficient industrial supplier, conducting rigorous launch schedules, or providing the highest-quality products to our customers, we never lose focus on who we are working to protect: our Nation and its citizens,” its website says.

That include those with eight arms.

Looking at the NROL-39 logo, people could be forgiven for mistaking it for a version of the Lovecraftian elder god Cthulhu, who wants to swallow the Earth whole. But that is not the only National Reconnaissance Office emblem with an interesting spin on the space-spying theme: others include Masonic motifs, superhero ones and a few more that, frankly, defy easy classification.
