Jesus Fulfilled King David’s “Messianic Psalm”, 22.
by Power Point Paradise • June 30, 2011
When Jesus hung on the cross, one of his last words was very significant. It seemed like he quoted the first verse of Psalm 22 when he cried out “My God my God why hast thou forsaken me.” He was not merely quoting, as those words were the true confession of his soul’s experience at that moment. For indeed the Father had left Jesus alone, to allow him to die the sinner’s death, separated from God and in utter desperation and loneliness.
But apart from this witness that he died the death for others, “cursed hanging on the tree”, he was actually leaving a clue to those of his countrymen who were sincere seekers of righteousness, and truly desired to know the truth of his life and suffering and his mission: “Was he really the Messiah?”
You can just picture a priest or Pharisee running home after witnessing Jesus’ suffering on the cross and his subsequent death. He heard Jesus last words, and perhaps also witnessed the Roman soldier piercing his chest with the spear, and finally the removal of his body by his friends to bury him.
“Yeshua was the Messiah! He quoted Psalm 22! He fulfilled Psalm 22!”
{vs. 1-8}
“Those were the exact words of some Farisees today”, he continued, “when they passed by and reviled him, wagging their heads. That’s what they were saying, ‘Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.’ Similarly also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, ‘He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.’ Even the thieves also which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. Here continue reading…”
{vs. 9-13}
“Everybody sure was gaping upon him with their mouths today. Continue…”
{vs. 14-16}
“Here, you see? That’s exactly what happened today! The very way he died, by crucifixion! That form of execution wasn’t known in King David’s day. Why should David write it like that, unless he received it in prophecy direct from God? ‘All my bones are out of joint. They pierced my hands and my feet!’
{vs. 17-18}
“Wow! I didn’t realise this yet. Again exactly what the soldiers did today. Fulfilled to the letter! Because the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: But as the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout, I heard them say among themselves, ‘Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be.’ That’s exactly what the soldiers did! I saw it with my own eyes! Wow! Amazing. It is like living in the Tanakh.”
{vs. 19-21}
“I don’t know about this last part yet. But if he really was the Son of God, the Messiah, well then that should be fulfilled too somehow.”
Thus far our dear Pharisee’s report of what happened that fateful day.
Well, we know the rest of it was, and is still being, fulfilled today. Three days and nights later Jeshua was risen from the dead, and DID go ahead to fulfill the rest of these words.
He appeared in the midst of His distraught disciples in his now glorious resurrection body, and was later seen of 500 brethren at once, before He ultimately left this world, and sat down at the right hand of the Father.
{vs. 22-28}
All fulfilled in detail. He is the governor among the nations, even though the nations haven’t accepted that fact yet, they will, when they see Him shortly coming in the clouds of Heaven with power and great glory
{vs. 29-31}
