Russian soldiers surrendered to the Ukrainian military

Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S. Oksana Markarova said Thursday that a platoon of Russian soldiers surrendered to the Ukrainian military, saying they "didn't know that they were brought to Ukraine to kill Ukrainians."

At a press briefing, Markarova said, “Just before I came here, we got information from our chief commander that one of the platoons of the 74th motorized brigade from Kemerovo Oblast surrendered.”

“They didn’t know that they were brought to Ukraine to kill Ukrainians. They thought they were doing something else there,” she added.

Markarova was unable to say how many troops were in the platoon and did not say whether they were being detained by Ukraine.

The ambassador called on leaders of the free world to form an “anti-Putin coalition” to stop Russia’s attack against Ukraine.

“Ukraine is defending our home. We will defend our home and it’s time for all free and democratic nations who value the principles and the territorial integrity and the right of any country for peace to stand together with us, but not only stand together with us, act together with us to stop the war in Europe,” said Markarova.

When asked if she expected U.S. troops to be sent into Ukraine, Markarova noted that her country is not a part of European or Atlantic security alliances such as NATO and said Ukraine does not expect any countries to fight on its behalf, though she said any help and peacekeeping operations would be welcome.

President Biden has decided which black woman he is going to nominate to the Supreme Court

Biden's choice is based on race and gender, and not on ability.

The president is expected to make the announcement Friday.

Media outlets report he will pick Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, 51, to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer, 83, who announced his retirement last month.

Jackson, who once clerked for Breyer, is a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, where many of her high-profile rulings have been overruled by high courts.

A source told CNN she accepted Biden’s offer in a call Thursday night.

Kyle Rittenhouse launches initiative to combat ‘lies’ from media outlets, personalities

Kyle Rittenhouse, the 18-year-old acquitted in the deadly shootings during last year’s unrest in Kenosha, Wis., said he plans to sue news organizations and personalities for spreading “lies” against him.

“Me and my team have decided to launch The Media Accountability Project as a tool to help fundraise and hold the media accountable for the lies they said and deal with them in court,” Rittenhouse said Monday on Fox News.

“I don’t want to see anybody else have to deal with what I went through,” he told Tucker Carlson, adding that he is looking “at quite a few politicians, celebrities, athletes, Whoopi Goldberg’s on the list.”

He claimed that the co-host of “The View” called him a “murderer” despite him being found not guilty of all charges in the shootings that killed two men and injured a third on Aug. 25, 2020.

“She called me a ‘murderer’ after I was acquitted by a jury of my peers. She went on to still say that,” he said. “And there’s others, don’t forget about Cenk from ‘The Young Turks.’ He called me a murderer before verdict and continues to call me a murderer.”

American style Chicha!

I did a blog last week about my desire to make rice pudding the conventional way.
The first comment was from Melody with a YouTube video of a no-bake recipe for a Venezuelan rice Chicha.

I tried a modified version 'American style Chicha' or maybe better described as Chatillion's Chicha. What's the difference?
The sugar was omitted. Low fat milk replaced the water. No ice cubes. Blender only, no whisking. Ginger and Cinnamon added.
Yes, it was nice. I'm on my 2nd cup and will pour the rest into paper cups and place into the freezer. I'm expecting they will make really nice frozen deserts.

Thanks for the idea Melody!!

They (whoever they is) say the proof is in the pudding. Or in this case, the proof is in the Chicha.

Actually, I'm going to drop a banana into the blender and see what that flavor is like!

Hush...

The Republicans are quick to talk about the Biden administration but they have been hushed about 'anything negative about Trump' which is strange as he's been in the news several times a day. Whether it's been boxes of confidential White House documents found at Mar-a-Lago, including some that were torn and taped back together, reports of him flushing papers down the toilet at the White House, his accounting firm dropping him as a client, suspected misuse of campaign funds, over valuing and devaluing his properties to obtain loans or avoid taxes, They are all quiet.

ROME -- Prosecutors in Genoa on Friday formally requested a trial for defendants charged with multiple manslaughter over the 2018 collapse of a highway bridge in the city that killed 43 people.

State TV and other Italian media said the prosecutors want 59 people to be tried. The defendants include some former top executives of Austrade per l’Italia, the company managing many of Italy’s highways and bridges.

The northwestern port city's Morandi Bridge broke apart during a rainstorm, sending cars and trucks plunging into a dry riverbed on the eve of Italy's biggest summer holiday, when roads are packed with travelers.

Former executives of the maintenance company which did work on the bridge as well as officials from Italy's transport ministry are also among those who prosecutors want to be tried, state TV's RaiNews24 said.

A judge will conduct hearings to decide whether to order a trial. Those hearings are expected to start sometime after this summer.

In their indictment request, prosecutors argued that some of the defendants were aware that the bridge which was built in the 1960s was at risk of collapse. They said that corners were cut on maintenance to save money.

The bridge's designer had recommended continual upkeep to remove rust, especially due to the corrosive effect of sea air as well as pollution's toll on concrete.

Italy's president has insisted that a demand for justice by the victims' families be honored.

Genoa daily Il Secolo XIX said prosecutors are also want defendants to reimburse the investigation's costs, including 2 million euros ($2.4 million) to develop software capable of handling information gleaned from thousands of files sequestered by investigators.

In 2020, the then-government of Italy forged a deal in which the Benetton fashion family agreed to exit Autostrade per l'Italia.

Genoa last summer inaugurated a replacement bridge which connects key highways. The span, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, a Genoa native, features 43 lamps in memory of the victims.
