Maruyama Okyo, Cracked ice, a 2-fold screen painting. These type of painting were used in tea ceremonies as backdrops. The painting has been influenced by Western type of use of perspective, brought to Japan by Dutch traders.

Painted when a heavy fog was over the landscape and extremely realistic rendering. One can imagine the fear in anyone standing on that ice. It sold recently for a record price. It was highly prized by its first owner, Japanese royalty.
Brice Marden's work reminds me of Cracked Ice in a way. Brice Marden ( I believe) is one of the most sought after painters today. Charlie Rose, a personal friend, had him on his show numerous times.
