yes love is necessary, just like trust,honesty loyalty, faithfulness, patience,understanding,mutual respect,similar personality,matching character..etc...but..love can also grow if not there before..in time..if both give it the effort..JMO

I think love is an ideal but usually are lationship where there is a good realistic view to life can also last. For most people love is an illusion.

it depends on your priorities. Love is not neccessary for life partner if you do not expect your partner to love you and when you are not able to love your partner.
Are we talking about arranged marriages? Still can work, based on traditions, common law, habits, routines and maybe respect. Love is just a bonus.

Of course you need love, if you stay together in a partnership without love (I'm not saying it's not possible), but if you don't love one another, sooner or later either one of you will fall in love with someone else!
