washing by hand VS. washing machine?

So my American boyfriend told me it would be unimaginable for him to live without a washing machine. He has never washed his clothes by hand and neither have many other Americans nowadays, in his words. This makes me wonder how people in America wash their silky dress or expensive business suit by such a damaging washing machine. Get them dry clean by a laundry service? How about women's bras that contain wires that can be destroyed or deformed by a washing machine? Still dry clean?

As a woman who comes from an oriental country where many people still wash some special clothes themselves by hand, I hope someone can solve this puzzle for me. Thanks!

lol ariel.....do tell...how long did it take to wash all those clothes?? wow uh oh wave
red if you wash on a daily basis it may be 1 hour or so but if you have a break for a couple of days then be ready to spend quite a time in washing laugh
But I wonder what are these washing mashines that tear the clothes confused dunno
Maybe our machines are too powerful dunno I do see my washing machine spin all the clothes together as a big knot! And I have to spend some time to untie it!
Hi Ariel, when the washing machine spins, all the clothes get tangled and certain clothes get "ripped off" or torn. I used to throw in all my clothes in the machine. Over time, some of my working clothes especially those with thin materials got torn. Some I wore only once or twice.crying
I do wash using the machine, and if I have time I do hand wash my undergarments. We have also a tool (wooden) to use when cleaning heavy stain clothes. We call it palo-palo. When I am washing undergarments on the machine, I use a net to hold the cloth together and that would not be torn directly by the spinning of th machine.
Shay you amaze me too... what are these washing machines of yours, do they have a helicopter propeller in them doh wow wow wow hug
Hehehe, Ariel maybe just because of some thinking of the old fashioned elders we have that doesn't trust the machine and that they can torn the undergarments into pieces. laugh bouquet
Shay just try the easy way and you d love it laugh hug bouquet
I will Ariel. Thank you for the advise...hehe hug
Shay just have pity for your hands ;) wink hug
When I was little my grandmother used a tub, scrub board and a ringer to wash clothes. It took til I think the 70's for my dad and uncle's to convince her a washer and dryer were much easier. Even my mom had a scrub board for washing some clothes and we didn't have a dryer the last 1970's. Just a clothesline.

Yes, there are many American who are unfamiliar with the items I mentioned.
I am thinking of inventing a washing machine using a hand type propeller and the problem will be solved for imail.
