Long ago...

Long ago in the 1800's, the parting words of an American professor to his student here in Japan was "Boys, be ambitious." A different version is used as an ad today. It says, "Japanese, be ambitious." As I don't have the proper stats but plain observation. It seems quite a number of Jyouths are opting to stop at senior high school and quite a number of foreign students are pursuing university studies via scholarships and student loans. Does it mean the typical Jmen aren't that ambitious. I remember a classmate of my son who said "I don't want to be somebody. All I want is to play." It seems a well-off parents and even not so well-off ones who are able to provide the conveniences and needs of their children plus a govt who is very kind in giving hand outs made them not to be an achiever. dunno

hi Tatami,

Is everywhere like that this days. wave bouquet
I am 71 years old so I remember what happened in the 40' and 50's. I am sorry to say that it was the same then with SOME of the young men. But those that cared are now in a prestigious and important life roles.

That's the way it will always be!
@Redex, Laz, and Ed, thanks for sharing your own observations too. Got to realize it isn't peculiar to Jyouths only. Just quite sad seeing a girl living in the same building as I, not finishing senior high school and opted working in the night entertainment. It would be nice knowing she stopped school in favor of a regular work in stores or factories. Though if she opted to finish senior high school and availed of student loans or scholarships to pursue higher studies just like the Peruvian boy in the same building, would make me, a stranger at that, happier. Whatever suits her, though. She and her siblings were brought up single-handedly by her mom. And to those who took the time to read, my thanks you's.bouquet
And what happens when people stop further education and start being lazy and expect the parents to dole out the money? Society stagnates and slowly but surely dies.
