Higher Culture

What makes a person think they are part of a "Higher Culture" in this day and age ?

What are the criteria or characteristics?

Is it Wealth ?
Is it all the real estates they own, or maybe all the family Monetary inheritance they have in the bank and that they don't have to work like the normal people in this world....

Or it Intelligence ?
Do they have to know more about Fine Arts, or classical music or politics.... Have they read more books or have a better knowledge on the world as to the normal person ?

Or is it Religion?
Do you have to be a Christian or Muslim or Buddhist ?

Or Colour of the Skin ?
Do you have to be a certain colour skin or eyes maybe even hair colour or maybe you have to be more beautiful on the outside to be part of a higher culture?

Or their Geographical location on the Map ?
Do you have to part of Europe or America or maybe a Scandinavian country?

Or is it the Food they eat, or etiquette, or moral and principals or is it even the air that they breath maybe it different ......... Lol

Sorry just trying to make sense ... I seen this statement been made a few times and I was wondering what make a person think they are of an higher culture.... :Dunno:

So how many of you believe that you are part of a HIGHER CULTURE and what are your reasons for believing so ?

If you leave a glass of milk sitting around long enough it will eventually form a culture . Perhaps the " higher culture " has been sitting around longer .

in our history the higher culture was determined by money and power someone had. But i believe taht has changed as the values of humankind have and will keep changing. To determine the higher culture depends on what you value most yourself. What do you consider to be higher qualities? But to make a general judgement about higher cultures today I believe only the generations after us will be able to determine wich truly was the higher one. All depending on what becomes important, for example if polution really does destroy allot of humans in the end the ruling won't be good for allot of industrial countries.
Hi delsurjoe .... Do you really think its all about the money .... grin

Teddy....you hit the nail on the head here. And thank God "the values of humankind have and will keep changing."

Vulpine thanks for your approval, to clarify the point you make about my comment of dressing well and having the means to do so.... I did not mention as you seem to think that "fancy " dressing is a representation of a cultured person . It is about dressing well. To suit the occasion , having the means but within his/her means. Cultured persons do not dress in a way to stand out or draw attention to themselves, they are modest rather than overtly stylish and need not be fashionable. Its about the quality of the dress, I have seen very poor people in my work who can dress in a cultured way, they can still be clean and obtain the right fit. Some of the most cultured people I have ever met were Indians who by our own standards were quite poor. Its about refinement within your own restrictions , good taste in all things comes into a high cultured existence always. saskia
Boban ... "To start with, they had bigger clubs which they used to beat those of "lower Culture"

Hi Boban thanks for you comment .... I guess that way of thinking still happens in today's world ... People still go around discriminating others thinking they are better ...

What baffles me is who sets the standards of high and low cultures ?
Hi Saskia,
Oh right I see what you mean now. No problem. It's just the way that you had omitted that pertinent point "but within his/her means" would have lead the reader to believe you only meant "dressing well" to be some form of more lavish attire synonymous with the more affluent of society. No worries. I appreciate your clarification. It all seems contiguous now. Appreciated.
So you work with people of poorer nations eh? That is very interesting and honourable work indeed. Salut! wine
Would you only work with the poor of India?
It's admirable that you see such dignity even amongst such impoverishment.
"The truest test of civilization, culture and dignity is character, not clothing.”

Hey Leo you put a pic of Morgan Freeman as a very distinguished man, all dressed up with a suit and a very smart gentleman pose .... Do you know when he visited South Africa to film the movie Invictus, I caught him with a bandana, earrings and riding an Harley .... But I couldn't find that pic ....

Yet I found this below ...now would you still say he is of higher culture ... grin

Hi Frank could you explain a bit more on your comment above ....
Nessa: "And yes she used the words "higher culture" and when she did she emphasized on race, religion, colour and location"

Can you quote my words in which I say such a thing?

I will elaborate what I mean only if you put back as your profile pic the not photo shopped pic with the hat laugh
I guess, all of us (spending time on a dating website) have not a "high culture"! uh oh But let's say it high standard and not culture, I know a bunch of peole here who indeed have a low standard. sad flower
P.S. "I'm curious as to what it is, that amuses you?"

Nothing amuses me on this blog, to tell you the truth. It s your gf who created it to cause an argument with me, it s she who called me several times to come here and argue with her. And I came back only when she said a 100% lie about what I had said. So ask her what she is on to :)
Well said Teddy thumbs up
Hi saskia ..... Thank for your contribution of what you think is a Cultured person ..... You have some very points there ......
Is there "higher"&"lower culture",of course there is......

Then again, what is culture,-and what/who decides it,-answer is,-no-one and nothing,it´s up to each one of us to decide what the differencies are,in other words,-a matter of taste and preferences..

Personally,I reckon Homeros or Vergilius being superior to any modern day "chic-lit",and I do prefer Dore or Repin than to graffiti.......

I prefer a European requiem to rap,and I do prefer rationalism and empirism than superstition....

I admire Gothic and Roman architecture than to most modern, and I prefer to watch political debates than to any reality show....

The list is endless,-but my point is,-I choose what I wanna take part of,-and why would I choose something that doesn´t trig my senses,?

So I choose what I consider as "higher",or to be more precise,-intellectual.....,and that´s where the line´s drawn,-intellectual or none intellectual...
In The Republic, Plato divides the city into specific classes: gold, silver, as well as bronze and iron souls. Each class is chosen to have a specific value. Plato believes that wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice join together to make up The Republic. However, Plato also believes that these values by themselves do not make up a Utopian society. Therefore, a combination of these four values in each person would be ideal to create a perfect society.

Some fools, try to justify their stupidity; putting out of context, to Plato's Republic. dunno

Hey Ness.. wave
I believe that there is NO such thing on earth as HIGHER CULTURE.
wine
it is vey common and it is a person pure ego ... and we all know it lol
It is obvious to me that Morgan Freeman aspires to be part of a higher culture. I mean why else would he wear that cap?peace

Hi Lily thank you for the above comment ... I guess you can find many kinds of people here on the net ....
Saviour66,
Attraction is found in the strength of a person s character, not in erudition, high standart of life...
Hi Saviour Nice to see you back ... I really enjoyed your last thread before you left ...

I see you speak about personal tastes and preferences ...

I guess we all may have difference tastes to the other ... which can be eventually grouped but as you said who/what decides which is higher and which is lower .... (Its like when we go looking for a partner we try to find the perfect one in regards to our likes & dislikes ... yet I prefer someone with who has a little different tastes to mine ... cus its always great to try new things .. and widen my horizon so to say ...
